Which would you rather do? Scenario A is someone who is 25 years old, work 80+ hours a week, 7 day work weeks with 1 day off a month, and retiring at the age of 30. Scenario B is a 25 year old who works 40 hours a week, have 2 days off a week, but unable to retire until they are 60.

In both cases, Person A would have the same income from investments as Person B. The only difference is that Person A worked a ton more hours and saved all their money, put it into a portfolio, and is collecting the capital gains/interest as income.

B. try to actually retire. It is the stupidest and most boring shit in the world. This was stated by wealthy men and women who actually had that option and not by those who are fantasizing about the prospect.

Your intellect degrades and you lose your youth quicker when you retire. your body acts different and you lose your edge. I think a good vacation is necessary.

I've been getting the same feedback. I plan on still working for fun, traveling, etc. Only difference is that I am not financially bound to debt and have passive income flowing.

My Mom retired after 32 years. At the end of her term (lol) she got a real estate license. She put the commissions in her savings. Then she sold her house, crap she didn't want and bought a sailboat. She did that 5 years. Worked at marinas, book stores to pay bills. Retirement is doable. It doesn't mean you sit around twiddling your thumbs. You can do other things.

I kind of chose the A method for my 30s. I had a job where I worked 6 days a week holidays overtime. It definitely changed things and put me in another place. Did that for about 2 years...worked on other outside ventures too. Now I work 3 days a week at my current job.I'll work as much as necessary for myself but a job? have to weigh everything. I definitely believe in getting the hard work out of the way so I dont have to do it later. Have to do some things but that relaxed life of moderate work and leisure is coming soon. Working to get things done/set things up.
The point of Scenario A is that you can still continue to work if you find it fun. Instead of doing a 9-5, you could maybe work 12-4 and 3 days a week. You have financial freedom to do whatever you want.

my grandpa still sees patients at 80. he could have retired a long time ago. my other grandpa died of eating too much pork at 72. he stopped working at 40+.
Retirement =/= staying at home and being on a couch. What if retirement means you plan on doing vacations that involves hiking, adventures, etc.
my idea of retirement is living on the beach all day. no beach no retirement. that's just working less to me.

Then that's how you choose to live it. I view it differently. I'm not tied down to a job, house/car/loans are all paid off so I don't need money. It allows you flexibility to spend your day as you want. So if that's on the beach, then you can certainly do that. If it's finding a cheap flight to Fisk to get pegged, then you can add that to your calendar.

This.

I was telling my doc (who is probably closer to your grandpa's age) that my

mom was thinking of retiring (which she just did)-- and he said the same

thing.... if you don't have something planned, an endeavor to occupy you,

you will die sooner than you should.

Please. I hike with skater shoes with apsolutly no traction. I depend on balance and good footing to keep me from falling while I scale large hills or highwalls.

I love exploring the forest, especially when I find old homes and foundations from 17, 18, and early 1900s. I come back with a metal detector to fins old coins and relics.

I'm going to pick up kayaking this spring also. The older settlements are almost always around a water source, and I live close to some pretty big natural lakes. A kayak would give me an option to adventure to hard to reach places. I'm excited just thinking about it lol.

Let's keep it fair. Both jobs require the same amount of work on site. You also don't take home your work once its completed.

Scenario A and B will retire with the same assets, except that with A, things will be paid off when you retire. E.G. your house will be done when you are 30 as opposed to 60. Both will get the same retirement funds, so you will get 100k/yr during retirement.

I wasn't supporting their necessity-- just the aesthetic, if worn properly.

My scorp/sag friend gets into that.... esp with the metal detector.

Not my cup of tea, but there is plenty to explore north of where we live--

old forts, Indian territory etc.

Happy kayaking.

I think the point of doing the A thing is being free to persue what you want quicker. So just because somebody's goal is to get out of the rat race asap doesnt mean they are going to sit around doing nothing for the rest of their life. "Retirement" is relative. Its not either/or unless you make it that way thats not how things have to go absolutely in one box or the other (my Auarius moon especially stays out of those "boxes").
That's exactly it. Way to put it in better words than me.
