I just watched this movie last night, and I agree that the child should have been returned to the mother. But it should have been done differently without damaging the reputation of Doyle. Also, after returning the child, someone should have followed up reguarly with the mother and informed protective services if necessary. The safety and well-being of a child takes precedence, and a parent forfits any "rights" to their child if they can't properly take care of them. The mother did however have the right to know that her child was alive.
