So I love the Avatar (The Last Airbender). I recall when Nickelodeon originally started advertising the cartoon and thinking, great, another stupid, soulless child's cartoon. I mean the trailer for it involved a lil bald-kid riding a penguin with 4 wings. It seemed like it would be a flop.
But then I watched the first episode and MY GOD! was it masterful. This made for television Japanamation- style rendering was phenomenal. A children's cartoon that's rooted in the four elements? A children's cartoon that involves the adaptation of martial arts in a non-prostituted form?
The truth is, the cartoon was rushed as I don't think Nickelodeon or the writers anticipated its popularity. It ended too soon but maybe that was due to the death of Mako? His voice was EPIC! Sorta like Britney Murphy or Phil Hartman. After his death, the Simpsons was never the same.
Sooooo many of my friends were drawn to the cartoon because of their children. But they became fans because of the superior writing, artistry and depth. There aren't many times where families gather around the together these days. One could argue that The Avatar brought families together.
So is it any wonder that I get an email this morning from a friend, age 30, asking if I'd seen the trailer and what I thought of it? We're all so nervous as we want it to be good...we need it to be good. I hope they do the cartoon justice? Is it possible? I mean what they did to DBZ was just...horrendous. Will Avatar, the REAL Avatar, fall victim?
Ok, I'm admittedly a dork. I love geeky things...one of them being cartoons. Akira is epic, Vampire Hunter D is classic. But movies have always fallen short. The only movie I've paid my own money to see was Spongebob Squarepants...which SUCKED! And here I am waiting to shell out money for a 2nd time to another Nickelodeon film. I pray they do it justice.
Side note, screw James Cameron and the studio for naming that shitty film Avatar. I'm glad he lost at the Oscars.
I dig the cartoon and can't wait for the movie. Like you I hope it doesn't suck. Dig Samurai Jack too, though it didn't air long *pout*. Cowboy Bebop, I used to stay up for. 🙂
dude, i was high one night and saw the trailer on tv, and it was like i could SEE when they used a stunt actor for certain parts. like wait, that looks like a 30 y/o man not a 12 y/o boy. we can only hope it's not the worst thing known to man.
