One individual fights for money, while the other fights for his ideologies or for his nations interests. One side is active military while the other is maybe former. Which would you have went to and why? Today, mercenaries exist but they are outlawed. So in there place are PMCs, Private Military Companies who can not directly engage in offensive operations, but they can provide support for standing militaries. And be offered contracts to defend individuals or certain areas that need security. Standing militaries fight for something, while Private militaries fight for individual gain. What do you like better?

I don't think the two are comparable, tbh.

Obviously, the one fighting for principal would be perceived as noble.

But that doesn't mean he is-- he could have a really fucked up ideology.

The hired guns could conceivably be providing a much needed service (against said ideologues) to a group who lacks the man-power to defend themselves.

That would hardly make them "bad".

So-- it depends.

Well true it does depend. But the perception of people see PMCs or Mercenaries has been way less than honorable. Because they have been known not to have any boundaries, or follow the rules of way or as a Modern day one would have to follow the UCMJ. They can even turn on their own clients or population they were paid to protect if it involves insufficient funds. But, it depends of the type of Mercenary/Mercenaries you deal with that's willing to stick to his/her/their morals to protect the population regardless of funding or personal interests. Though a Soldier of Destiny fights for his nation's ideologies, interests, or defense. Though it depends on what his country makes him do that can be viewed as less than honorable. But, as you said- that soldier can have a fucked up ideology or not care for his nation's. Both sides have their ups and down and require individualism and teamwork when it is needed.
