If you don't feel like your getting the attention you need/want in the beginning, when a man is usually most enthusiastic about meeting you, then I think you should get rid of him. It usually doesn't get any better. IMO, you did the right thing.
Now taking 3 years to get over someone I can't help you with, cuz it takes me all the three minutes.
If I can think of tips later I'll come back.
