On March 8 last year I struck up a friendly conversation with a female colleague. On the same day I added her on Facebook and we started communicating online. On April 17 we met up outside of work for the first time and fell in love, pretty-much immediately. Should I consider our —anniversary?? as March 8 (the first instance of us becoming acquainted socially) or April 17 (our first date)?

Well you can have 2 anniversaries. The 1st one, the day you met & the 2nd one, the day you both fell in love. Even though tradition says to only count the day the relationship was made official, most couples still acknowledge the official day they met too.

I agree you can have as many as you want. If you're asking us to pick one, though, I would say your first in-person date when you fell in love. My husband and I have 3 anniversaries: our first date, our engagement, and our wedding.

Pick whatever day you want. I've never remembered the actual date so my partner and I just celebrated on whatever day worked for us in the month it happened. My ex and I didn't even remember the month so we picked a day in that season (winter)!

I personally like to celebrate whenever the mood hits 🙂

my bf and i decided to go with the day we officially decided we wanted to be in an exclusive committed relationship, although we had gone on dates prior.

we were essentially exclusive from the first date, so that could have been the official anniversary and i faced a similar question to yours. i decided to go with the one that felt more "solid" like, yes, this is when we definitely were -together-.

😛

so i'd pick the second one but that's just me.

It doesnt' appear to mean much to you either way it goes ... it appears to be a decision.

That's pretty fucking sad .. though, not surprising.

Perhaps, you should go with how she ((((((((((((((feels)))))))))))) about it.
