I really need some Scorpio advice here

So here is my story. I've been together with my Scorpio man for more than 1 year. Everything was great between us: big love, great match, lots of fun, same hobbies, great passion and sex, same life vision, etc.

Suddenly 3 months ago he told me that he wants a break because he sees no evolution in our relationship. Upon this I tried to tell him several times that I want also evolution and that if we work together for this, we can make it work.

Then he said that he has problems with my roots because I am not Belgian (he is Belgian, I am Macedonian) and that he doesn't want to meet my parents because he is afraid he is not going to like them. He asked for more time and space in order to get his thoughts together untill he figures out what he wants.

We have had almost no contact ever since. And since last week we decided not to see eachother anymore, because after 3 and a half months he still doesn't know what he wants.

He says that he likes me a lot and still has feelings for me, that he is afraid that he might regret it badly if he lets me go and loses me, but besides all these he doesn't want to do anything but waiting for his thoughts to get clear. He wants to keep on seeing me as friends.

I told him that I love him deeply and that I don't want to lose him and that I want to invest in this relationship and work on it. He knows how much heartache he caused me and how much I am suffering.

I don't know anymore what to do. Should I give him all the space he wants and never contact him again, untill he contacts me back? Or should I stay friends with him and keep on hoping that this friendship would upgrade again to a relationship, like we used to have one (is that even possible)?

Have you guys been through such situations?

What did you do / what would you do? Any advices are welcome..

Honestly, it's very sad. You seem a nice person. Can't ever understand these type of excuses for cutting someone off. I think it's unfair towards you
