When I was at high school I would flirt with girls and be silly. I had a friend and everytime we went past each other we would say "hello, my lesbian lover" and laugh because it was so silly.
She ended up having to leave school because some nasty girl decided to tell everyone she was bi and EVERYONE got in on it. We both knew we were just innocently being silly but the rest of the kids thought it was funny...so it spread...and then the people who didn't know us...didn't know what idiots we were...believed it. To this day she still has people laugh at her because of it. She has the closest of friends say she's a lesbian. Either as a joke or truly wondering. She's straight.
Be careful listening to other people, even if they're his friends, because the same thing could have happened. I imagine if a couple of girls could be silly and pretend to be gay...boys can do it too, and it may stick to them.
If he says he's straight on facebook..I would just go with it. Even if he isn't..he may not be in a place where he wants anyone to know. He may need more time to process it. If he is straight and you keep assuming he's gay...you could mess up a friendship.
