How Autism Affects Expressing Love and Relationships

People with autism often experience love and care deeply but may struggle to express these feelings in ways that are easily understood. Misconceptions can lead to misunderstandings in romantic relationships. Recognizing that emotional expression varies and understanding autism's impact on communication can improve relationship dynamics.

Inspired in part by another thread, in part by other signs' observations, and in part by internal conversations I've been having with myself:

Perhaps because so much of their behavior runs counter to mainstream conceptions of how to express affection and love, people with autism are rarely considered in romantic contexts. A constant complaint among the individuals interviewed for this piece is the misconception that people with autism can't express love or care for others. โ€”I think a lot of times someone will go out on a date with someone on the spectrum and think they're a robot,?? said Alex Plank, founder of WrongPlanet.net, a popular online autism community. โ€”It's hard to read us if we don't explicitly say what we're feeling, but all the feelings are there.

It's not that individuals on the spectrum do not have the same desire for love; they just may not know how to find it. Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA said, โ€”If you asked a person with autism if they wanted a romantic relationship, they would probably say yes, but they would probably also say they don't know how to.

Virgos and/or Virgo dominants - would you say that, in relationships, your partner's interpretation of the experience affects the quality of your own [experience]?

Do you tend to try and analyze, compartmentalize, and/or classify your emotions, or do you simply allow yourself to feel them?

Yes, you're trivializing. Now feel guilty and delete thread LOL

I think Virgos go to the extreme in this...from the Virgos who cannot and will not even try to understand another person's feelings to those who will go the extra mile to make sure there is clarity, to make sure they understand how their partners feel and who actually act on that, for the sake of their partner.

I allow myself to feel every emotion, the good and the bad. It's the only way I feel genuine.

You too huh?

My dad fits that assessment like a glove.

He's gemini moon, venus/mars libra, pluto libra, mercury libra.

You'd think he's be nice and pleasing but he's annoying and rude as fuck

Of course. It's kind of hard to be happy when the person you're supposed to be sharing your life with isn't feeling the same way. And likewise, I can't think of why I wouldn't be happy if they were.

I rationalize more than feel I suppose. It's how I give meaning to what's happening instead of leaving it a convoluted mess of nonsense that can't be related to others.

ok this may be a basic Astrology question, but what makes one Virgo dominant?

I have Pluto in Virgo, 10th house, MC and Lilith Virgo. Is that why I can relate so much to Virgos in my life and the stuff I read on here or when reading about Virgos it hits home?

Hmm okay, thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ I just have never truly felt I fit "aqua" description. I see what Virgos are accused of here on the forums or the descriptions and it rings truer to me. But I also know I'm a cusper; so have both cap and aqua in me. So maybe it's the cappy influence that is ringing true to the Virgo stuff.

@ the op I know I am not a Virgo, but thinking with my Virgo placements, I can answer.. if not ignore ๐Ÿ™‚

I analyze & compartmentalize, because I hate feelings or more so having them. I am happy as a clam if emotions are not involved- yet I long to have them in my life. A walking contradiction!

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why people would be upset about this .... autistic people are tuned into the universe, and function at a higher frequency.

Why is that bad? Why should that be offensive?

I'd love to be that evolved, tbh
