Houston is inland, but read about the great Hurricane of 1900 that destroyed Galveston, which was a booming city of its time. It actually was competing with Houston for business. When that Hurricane hit, it destroyed almost the entire city of Galveston, causing merchantile to be sent to Houston since there was a port already made. Now the Port of Houston/Houston Ship Channel is one of the busiest in the world. Houston and Galveston are very close in miles...so when you consider that the Ship Channel ventures pretty much into Downtown Houston, Houston is actually a coastal city and not inland. Galveston is actually an island.
