LIB, what kind of materials did you use to make this? I want to know because I'm building a small grotto for my terrapin terrarium and I was wondering what to use to hold the stones together that would be safe for animals to be around.

The only thing I bought was #1-a stone ( $ 54.00 for 1/2 ton load) Total cost of project was $ 54.00

I did not dig up the grass/mossy area of the ground. This was a soft ground area of the property surrounding the back of my home. I used a wheel barrel and would shovel the stone(from the pile of small stone dropped by a dump truck) into the wheel barrel and dump it. Then I used a metal rake and hand grader and evenly had about a 4" deep base of the small stone until entire area was covered. Then I borrowed my neighbors 4 wheeler with a wide bucket and with a crow bar dug every single rock you see here out of the forest. I'm in upstate NY so the rock here is colorful and beautiful. Some are from a brook and the surface was very soft to the touch. My son helped me load the rocks on and off, I had some sore muscles but it was worth it. No material was used other than natural materials. I did this a year ago...and it's safe for animals. After a hard snowy winter, the stones are nice and planted...Took me about 3.5 weeks since I did it by myself. Also...I added some more boulders to the fire pit so it's a little higher and deeper than this picture. Having a nice bon fire/picnic again this memorial weekend. 🙂 One of my proudest projects..

this thread topic is a good inspiration for saving money and fixing/cleaning up your home/garden, ect. surroundings.

this guy has a lot of videos on making your own laundry soap, softener, and how to clean with low costs. i wouldnt make my own laundry soap but i like the other vids on making your own window cleaner, which is easy an cheap (just white vineagar and water) and use newspaper if you want.

i ask because i hate wasting money on things i can do myself.

Ive been doing my own brazilians for bout 5 years maybe more and i almost paid someone to do it for me yesterday but i said no and got off my lazy ass and did it. I felt a huge sense of accomplishment.

i can be so tight fisted when it comes to money.

Yep. I bought a house. Big renovation project. Im doing everything myself right now I mean everything. Right now the roof. Complete tear off, repair, re-do. Very limited experience in any of this but some experience. Its the thing about the money (which i dont have after buying the house) and learning things. I keep it all to myself mostly and dont make a big deal...But neighbors are noticing and offering help here and there automatically. Just because they said they appreciate what im doing. Its relatively nearby but in another city so friends and such are very limited to assist.

that is a huge endeavor! It will mean so much more at the end of the day when your finished and you still have money in the bank. a sense of accomplishment goes so far.
