Mr. Cap and I have been together for a long time as you all know. (3 years) We've officially lived together for 3 months now and we haven't had any problems. We are very loving with one another.

We weren't really looking, but someone came to us with the opportunity out of the blue. A friend is giving away free puppies to good homes. And it's one of our top breeds that we have always wanted. We've asked to see photos and potentially set up a meeting with the dog.

I guess I'm just looking for advice from people who have gotten dogs with their boyfriends/significant others. A lot of people tell me to wait until after marriage to get a dog. But I do see really happy unmarried couples with dogs! Thanks for the advice in advance 🙂

*...if we break up...*

We will definitely have to discuss that.

Anything else? Do dogs change relationships? Better them? Etc.

I would like to hear some experiences too. Good or bad.

As long as you both have AMPLE time and resources to invest in the dog, why not?

If not, it could become a burden/point of contention and you don't want the poor dog to

suffer for that.

What kind is it?

Cats aren't for either of us. It's a German shepherd male, but it was already given to a home...we just found out. It's okay though. Maybe in the future we will go out of our way to get one, unless the opportunity is offered again.

My cap and I thought about a dog, a really good idea he came up with was finding a local pet shop that did over night and weekend puppy sitting.
So you didn't buy the dog but you kept it for however long 'til the new owners were ready or the shop opened again after the weekend...
It was such a learning curve for us because I've had dogs of my own all my life but Cap has only ever had a family dog as a child so our expectations and experiences were different and we discovered that together!
Decision was -no Dog! =)

on one hand there is the argument that, if you split up... who gets the dog? Painful, just adds drama and upset to what would already be a bad situation.

On the other hand, there's the argument that you shouldn't be so afraid of losing something that you deny yourself even the chance to have some of the best things in life.

I say if you're stable, love and trust one another get the dog.
