Hello
I have been laid off as well. Not a surprise that they are having financial problems. I was mistreated and I have worked so hard! I have two wounderful daughters 10 nd 8 and a great resume'. As I lived in Vermont, worked for international companies and build my career and continued education, it is kind of a blessing to have the opportunity for someting else. I love New York and I know it very well but a friend (Libra) is suggesting not to do anything crazy or to think about it. I have to move fast and I would love the challenge. I was just offered for instance a job in Italy as a director for a fashion company and it would be just perfect. But I want to be in USA and be working in New York. I just hate to be laid off. Anyone has a suggestion?

216, hello..
I know it sucks but what can you do? Start off by making sure you collect employment benefits to have some money coming in and just keep sending out those resumes every day-via fax or e-mail or postal. Something has to come along. As for the employment benefits, you won't get your first paycheck until 3-4 weeks from now. The government takes THAT LONG! Good luck and have faith.

Yes, but if they take that long you'll get them all retro. In other words, you'll have 3-4 weeks paid to you all on the first check!!!! You also have a 13 week extension after you run out your initial claim. President Bush signed the extra 13 weeks in to effect on March. So, if you need it you'll have a total of 39 weeks of benifits. Let the bastards who laid you off pay for it, it comes out of their pockets anyway!!! Consider it a well deserved break.

I'm still unclear about the retro thing--I mean, at least it's SOME money--better than nothing. And from what I understand, when collecting employment checks, your previous companies have already (and the employee) paid into the benefits. So, it is due to the former employee--they have the right to collect. God forbid that there will be any discrepancies with this because I REALLY need the dough! I don't trust my last employer.

In your paper work or your UI book it will tell you all this information. No, employees don't pay into it and they (all companies) HAVE to pay it. It is the law!!! You have it coming, that is your saftey net, and while it isn't much money, it is better than nothing! Retroactive means they will pay you everything up to the time you filed. So, if you have to wait 3-4 weeks before you get a check, you'll get paid for that time!

Man, it is TOUGH out there!......I've been sending out the resumes and letters and no calls are coming through. Even the employment agencies I have applied to aren't calling. It's starting to hit me how hard it really is to get a decent job. I know it's not so bad in the medical, law or education fields but they're NOT my chosen field!

Anyone else having a hard time getting a gig?

I'm still chugging away at the resumes and damn cover letters Kenny--sending them out every day--got a hot interview tomorrow morning (Thursday) and I'm praying to almighty God that I get hired--so far I really like the company. Thank you for thinking of me and yes I AM very happy that October has started!! YIIPPPPPEEEE!! Fall is finally here--my birthday's next week--I hope I can feel special then.
Cheers,
Sloane
