How do you view the "like" phenomenon? Do you think likes have changed our society in any way? Do you use likes to "communicate?" Meaning, lets say you into someone, do you "like" their stuff hoping you'll make an eventual connection? Do you feel good about yourself when you get likes? Do you lose self-esteem when you don't get them? Does your ego kick in when someone never likes your stuff. Discuss your views on likes.

Interesting question.

I use them for what they're for, mostly, to indicate that I like or support an idea. It feels like more of a natural conversation that way, where the "like" is the smirk or laugh they'd get in person. I have noticed that I'm more likely to "like" something that someone I already like posts and less likely to "like" something someone I don't like posts.

It annoys me how much I like seeing the little red notifications. Dopamine is a hell of a drug.

Yea, see this is what I mean! Likes actually speak a language. When two people are arguing, whoever gets the most likes wins? Lmfao. "You see it as a smirk. It really is kinda interesting how likes are used.

I'm torn about it.

Personally I always disable notifications of getting likes since they clutter those notifications a lot.

On the other hand it's a good tool to acknowledge a good post someone made or to signal that all is good between you and other persons but it often has the tendency to become problematic due to it's ambigious nature.

Yup. Its a kinda a valuable tool when you just want to do a flyby

I predict one day we will probably all have some sort of VR/interactive eyewear, where you can recieve "likes" just walking around at the mall or supermarket....

pretty sure the next stage of human evolution is to become fulltime attention hooring thirst traps, who only speak in humblebrags....

Yeah, sometimes I hate seeing how that happens in arguments, especially when it's an obvious popularity contest.

Was Facebook the first to use likes? It's crazy how fast I got used to them. And now all the emojis to extend the attempt to use body language online.

I'm not sure about that. I've never been into Facebook. Know matter how strong the argument, the one with the most likes will "win." LMAO

You ever see that episode of Black Mirror? Real life success was based on the number of likes you received. Example: You need 1000 likes to get a job. If you have under 1000, people don't associate with you. /dead

Like all tools it can abused though. And many do.

That's what makes me torn about it.

Personally speaking I think it would be better if likes were never invented in the first place. I prefer direct communication most of the times since it tends to be much clearer but people seem to lose their communicative abilities more and more.

I agree with the "directness." TBH the one thing I do like about likes is what you mentioned earlier. Its a quick way to connect with another user when time doesn't permit a convo

Its like any other form of self-marketing/promotion really...I mean if you can succeed (get enough subscribers, followers, likes, etc.) in one form of social media, you should expect that to have an influence on any potential line of employment, if its a similar market....Something like this is expected with writers, in certain genres...a lot of publishers prefer if you already have a blog or some SM presence, somewhat of a fanbase/following, or at least develop that, before they even take you on....

Could make dating/meeting people a lot easier....You strut through a crowded mall in your sexiest outfit/heels with your glasses on, don't even have to make awkward eyecontact - notifications flashing, dopamine surging, increasing your confidence as you go.....get back to your car and click on the profile for each like, slide into the DMs of the suitor of your choice....

could make meeting people in bars, clubs, etc. much easier....no more failed attempts at buying you a drink, or using cheesy pickup lines....men don't have to be publicly shamed, you don't have to feel cruel turning someone down....neither have to sit for hours, trying to signal from a distance with ambiguous body language cues....its just the new way to communicate...

i don't like getting likes because half the time they're shut up likes and it means someone is done responding to me. i can't really complain too much either because most of the likes i give are because i want to acknowledge someone has said something but i don't feel like continuing the conversation/don't know what to say to them.

It's just another excuse to indirectly bully others, while acting like regressive human beings...

Explain the bullying part

By liking a poster who is arguing with (or attacking) the person the bully doesn't like...

Okay I got what you're saying. Fantum and I were just discussing that. Likes definitely elevate popularity

Willingly comply with the dxp cliques, post as many 'attractive' photos of yourself and share portions of your private life (thus effectively cancelling out the private aspect), and watch the number of likes stream in... like female dxp newbies begging why a guy who recently starting fucking them has suddenly lost interest (how dare they!)...

"Likes" are these days be coming a validation mechanism.

Take Facebook for an example, the "like" phenomenon got so much importance that it transpired from like to "love" "laugh" and all that shite in between.

Many folks genuinely get upset if people don't "like" whatever they "share". I see "share" as a subtle form of cyber bullying too same as I view "like" as a form of peer bullying into agreeing to someone's views without actually aligning to the concept.

On boards like DXP I see "liking" as agreeing to the thought/written words, sometimes even in a banter way (like the way it happened on my recent topic).

On a forum, If I genuinely like something, I will quote and reply too as it will be for people I don't know (Well, 99% here) as either I disagree with what they've said or I want to demonstrate my agreement.

If I REALLY "like" someone or their way of thinking, I communicate in long messages 🙂

On social media like Facebook, IG etc.... I don't like anyone shit, because

A) if you are a friend (which you would be If you are added) you already know what I really like and vice versa

B) if you don't like shit I post (I rarely do) I don't a give a fuck coz I only posted it for a rant OR i shared it so that I can refer to it in my spare time. Oh I change the privacy of share to "only me" so that No One has to deal with my BS posting lol

In short, no, I don't loose self esteem if no one likes me shit, I don't communicate with likes, I feel indifferent with/without receiving likes.

My ego is reserved for better things. 🙂

Not necessarily....Some likes are more valuable than others. Scorp Moons are really cheap with their likes, so if you get one of their's, its like 5-10 regular likes. If I'm in an argument, Tiziani likes are my favorite....I always feel like I'm being reasonable and on the right path if I get them. I don't even want to know if he's liking my opponent just to stir the pot further....

Its all about how you precieve your likes....I can even appreciate the pity likes....You posted that joke on the front page, and your anxiety is doubling every 10 mins it goes unliked....You're thinking about deleting it altogether, then some compassionate soul rescues it with a pity like, and that often breaks the dam, and you get at least 2 more likes from people who were on the fence about it...

The way in which people relate definitely has changed since when I was a kid, which is cool. IMO things have to change and progression is necessary. I kinda get a little freaked out tho when I see a 6 or 7 year old with a cell phone or tablet. I was at the beach one time and saw what looked to be a 7 year old girl posing like a 30 year old while taking pictures on a phone.

Fuck a Tiziani like. Honestly. A few years ago, an Aries girl unbeknownst to me was competing with me for DJs attention while I was in an argument with him in his ''let me rate your looks, post your picture'' thread. We all know how much he likes a fight so he wouldnt pay her posts any attention. She got so sick of it that in another thread she outted Tiziani for liking/agreeing with her negative posts about me while he was kissing my ass at the same time

Likes are a bunch of bullshit and a tool for controlling the masses and fuelling these anxieties amongst individuals. Tool for creating crippling mental illnesses

110 % agree. ts kinda strange that a button can actually change how one views him or herself

It is a perception that is created. The more likes you get directly correlates with how likeable others perceive you to be. How popular they perceive you to be and as an extension it then seems to define a persons worth as an individual. Are they worthy of someone wanting to follow their every move, they’re that revered and venerated that people wish to constantly keep tabs on what they do and ensure to like every single one of their pictures/status/musings. The perception is that their words hold weight and have more meaning in this world amongst people because a huge number validate those words by giving hundreds upon hundreds of likes to them. It becomes a competition. People then desperately seek out likes by doing anything and everything to garner the same quantity of attention. It’s a huge blow to a vulnerable persons self esteem when they see that another individual can upload something which gets so many likes within mere seconds but they can have something up for days and no one could care less (in their mind). Human psychology is such that they begin to feel it’s a direct reflection of the fact that they’re not likeable enough, charming enough, funny enough. It can cause immense paranoia and disbelief in ones value and worth. It fuels and breeds these horrific anxiety related disorders and mental illnesses because people start spiralling when they can instantaneously garner the same level of veneration. Then ofcourse there’s this beauty ideal and standard of now which is a whole other rant.

Honest, after a long time I felt my cheeks growing warm from embarrassment!

Progression and de-generation are 2 different things.

As the time is going by and humankind is progressing in the field of tech specifically, the generation is becoming dumber.

No one needed a spiraliser or a fucking avocado knife 10 years ago! I'm sure zucchini and avocado were part of my diet when I was 12 ! And my mum knew how to chop/peel a God damn avocado!

God, my kids will hate me for being the "un-cool" mother

This is why I like when you post on my threads. You have incredible insight.

I could not agree with this more!

Well said even with the errors

I like you. I liked the back handed compliment. And I definitely liked the subtle shade.

Nah, no shade and the compliment is real. Your message still came across even with the errors

We have unconscious analogies and inferences that we project minute to minute in our lives. Using the like function is just another way of expressing those reactions to ego.

How about an example of this :

"We have unconscious analogies and inferences that we project minute to minute in our lives"

It’s fairly straight forward. We either empathise, sympathise, enjoy or hate.

Those reactions/inferences we express via likes are generated from internal dialogue, the post you like is just the thing that sparks the ego response.

Got it and its true. Thanks for the clarification

Well said, but I disagree with a lot of this. I think, just as you give your self the benefit of the doubt in having the ability to distinguish between someone who is merely popular and well-liked, and someone who actually has good insight/input etc., many people are the same way. Consider the analogy of popular music. Mainstream trash is always going to get millions of likes on Youtube, but people with a more refined ear will often gravitate towards greater quality. Not everyone is persuaded merely by mass appeal. I think its also an assumption to say people who are well-liked, then desperately seek out the likes, catering to others. They may simply just get likes for being who they are, and not change at all. Alternatively, if they do feel that sort of pressure, they may feel validated enough and decide not to give a shit....Not everyone wants to be popular. Some people actually feel constrained/controlled by popularity and attempt to avoid it.

Everything from your "its a huge blow...." sentence onwards actually scares me.....Its hard to believe that people are that vulnerable, but I'm raising a daughter, so I definitely have to take that into account. Makes me want to keep her away from SM altogether, and I definitely think the beauty ideal ties into all this, is one of the main sources of validation that SM plays off of, etc.

People get so mad if you don’t “like” their stuff!!! I don’t understand it. I’ve had a friend call me and tell me to look at her pictures and like them.

REALLY—!!!!!

I don’t understand the whole idea behind it.

I’ve even had an argument with a Gemini girl here and she kept liking my posts as I was talking shyt to her lol.

I actually stopped what I was typing and asked her why she was doing that.

She said it was a confirmation that she read the post. Lol. Too funny.

On facebook I think people gives likes freely to those they are not close friends with. With close friends there is much thought behind a like or no like. Also it is give and take when it comes to people you are close with. If they don't like, you don't like. With others there is no score.

JFC - ya'll fixate and dissect everything like this - no wonder there is so much insanity in the younger generation - WTF cares. I like if I agree or disagree - more of an acknowledgement that I actually saw the return comment.

You drive yourself crazy with this shit. Like or don't like. IDGAF LOL

Sorry. I'm a thinker.

it's ok lol my fire is always short lived

LMAO. Nah, I understand what you mean. I'm 36 and didn't really experience the whole social media thing. So the entire thing (social media, likes, emojis) and the way it effects society blows my mind.

my co-worker and I laugh about all the people that are addicted to this social thing - even older people - I loathe it but then again, someone can say well, you DXP - so ? ... yes, but I also balance that out with living in the mountains by myself and having lots of peace and quiet and no, I don't text my neighbors every time I drop a large turd

Haha that made me chuckle !

I had an exact chat with this girl at work....she was moaning about her aunty sharing this chain messages on Facebook and this another dude tagging himself every Where including his home ! I just suggested she posts a comment on asking him to tell what time he goes for a poo and how did it look like.

She did, and she now has one less friend on Facebook, I had to buy her a sympathy coffee.

Fuck my life.
