Would you be willing to accompany a friend or family member to Dignitas in Switzerland to be there for their assisted suicide? A friend of mine has been asked by a friend to accompany her when the times comes. She is in terrible physical pain which is getting worse as time goes on and she has decided not to prolong the agony.

My friend has granted her friend their wish and says she will support her when the times comes.

Would you do this for someone you cared for?

Yes, she's a brave lady and my friend is kind. I'm thinking, when the time comes I may go too, my friend may need some support on the journey home?

Yes it's a shame people have to travel so far and yet it's a beautiful country to pass over in.

If I was very sick, or if I thought I'd become a burden to those i love, I'd consider it. My dad used to say to me "if I become a pain in the arse or a burden, shoot me or give me a cynide pill lol. Love that mindset and I've adopted it too.

I dunno, I'd really want to be there for someone and support them but that would be really hard 😢

Sure.

Would you consider it for yourself if you were in a lot of incurable pain?

I already did consider it for myself even without any concrete physical pain.

I haven't looked into it, but i wonder what the conditions are, i.e. is it only allowed for very sick people who need proof of their conditions from a medical specialist?

I guess it's about putting your feelings last, but yes it would be very hard. When my dad wanted to die (naturally) i kept holding on to him until he asked me to let go of him, when I did, he passed very peacefully, God bless him. He was suicidal all of his llfe because of an abusive childhood.. 😥

Can't speak for dignitas but the usual conditions usually are terminal illness with no hope of recovery. Mental illnesses like depression etc. don't count and you would need proof, yes. In the case of dignitas you also need some money to cover the costs I think.

I think in the Netherlands you can go for any reason. I think you might have to be a citizen there though.

Yep, but there is a testing process of months involved and the current law has been questioned a lot lately.

Remains to be seen how it goes in the future.

Makes sense that there’s stringent testing in place.

I may accompany someone. It’s a possibility.

Have you been asked Damous? Are there many places do it in the US?

Someone very close to me has looked at numerous places to end themselves. It’s an option for them. As far as how much I know - not much. Shrug, most I know is that you’ve gotta be terminally ill / exhausted all options for what ails you

Okay thanks Damous
