What do you wish consumers knew when dining at restaurants or being served at bars?

Any former servers, hostesses or bartenders here?

I served when I was 18. Ugh the level of ignorance from consumers was unbearable! Once you've had certain jobs (especially sales/retail) there are some things you'll always remember and never forget!

1. If the clothes you're checking out fall off the hanger, put it back on the F'ing hanger!

2. Not tipping is just not ok. The average hourly wage for a server is $ 2.93. When you consider that they have to tip out the bartender, food runner & hostess every night, including many other diners that may have stiffed them that day, that leaves them with an hourly wage of ZERO. They depend entirely on your tips. If you don't tip them, they basically just paid YOU to have lunch/dinner.

3. If you want good customer service, you have to pay for it. If you keep treating servers like crappy servants regardless of how great or not they are, they'll have no incentive to give good customer service. $ 5 tip on a $ 75 check is why it took 20 minutes for your sweet tea the next time.

4. Stop asking for extra alcohol. If you want more, pay for it. Bartenders are held accountable for every single extra ounce of alcohol. Their employer has figured out down to the cinch just how much alcohol should be used/left over, according to all the drinks that were rang in. If their bar costs keep coming up short, they can lose their job & ability to provide for their families...all b/c you wanted your drink "extra strong today."

5. If you're dining with your children, for God's sake PLEASE tip a little extra. Guess who has to clean up those extra 50 food crumbs your child threw on the floor? Your server! The same server that may not be able to get to their next table in time b/c they spent an extra 5-10 minutes cleaning up YOUR child's mess.

6. Don't ever order lemons or limes for drinks or with food. The lemons/limes themselves may have been washed off & cleaned, but the equipment used to chop them most likely isn't.

7. The customer is always right. Ok cool. But don't forget that people are still people. You're not the only person who may come out of character when someone continually treats you like crap, makes it obvious that they look down on you, disrespects you & shews you away like a fly! Don't expect for them to be punching bags just b/c you think you ordering a $ 10 pasta dish makes you a God

I don't think they should be tipped. If they don't like that job and risks that come with it, then settle for something more secure.

As a European, I have huge problem with tipping concept.

um alot of Europeans do tip though. I dont know which country you were in, but they do it anyway. Even quite alot when it's a nice restaurant. Even as small as a cafe, just some change for them.

1. If you're not gonna bother ordering while talking away on the phone I'm going to skip you.

2. I don't care if you're a coffee expert, I'm the one that makes it so suck it up and stop telling me what I already know about coffee.

3. Strong bevvy means extra shots, those extra shots costs money. And I don't care how people love you or it's your birthday it's the same price or you can fuck off.

4. Stop looking surprised when I say a coffee is 5 bucks or a beer is 10 bucks, welcome to Sydney, enjoy your stay.

5. I'm juggling dishes with both my hands and considered using my feet, there's nothing you can do to get me to stop, I've already said nicely wait a minute, stopping me will just annoy me and I might just drop everything on you.

6. Know your drink, If you order a martini I expect you know it, classic martini does not equal some apple peach vodka crap, and don't give me shit when I serve you what YOU ordered saying I don't know shit about cocktails.

7. I told you there's a 20 minute wait on drinks, kindly reminded you we were understaffed and if you were willing to wait upwards of up to 20 minutes, if you accept I expect you to actually wait 20 minutes. No point lying to be after 5 minutes saying it's taking 30 minutes when I have the order on my screen and how long it's been.

8. No smoking inside means no smoking, even when I politely asked you to go outside. I don't care if you're just paying for the cigar you are just mentally challenged thinking it's fine to bring it inside and set off the smoke alarms.

9. If you ask for no ice thinking you'll get more bang for the buck, think again.

8. If you notice that a section of a restaurant is empty but yet get told that you can't sit there, it's b/c there's no server in that section witch = longer wait time! Trust me, the hostess is looking out for you sometimes when she makes you wait an extra 5 minutes for a "booth." A booth that they're sure you'll get faster service in if they put you in sections assigned to specific servers already! Servers take breaks too, ya know!

9. Speak up! If you want extra ranch, extra cheese or your steak medium rare, you have to be specific. Don't look at your server like they're crazy when your dish is missing something it didn't automatically come with, if you're the one who wasn't specific about what you wanted. How the F are they supposed to know that you like blue cheese on the side with your pasta if you didn't specify that when you placed the order! Speak up!

10. Servers don't like taking parties as much as you'd think. If there's 10 of you who are all paying separately, but yet only 1 of you tipped, don't be surprised when your "party of 30" has an enormous wait! It's probably b/c the servers are in the kitchen arguing over who's gonna have to burden themselves with taking it!

11. Don't call a manager for small stupid stuff. Let your server problem-solve. Calling for a manager b/c your sweet tea isn't sweet enough is a waste of yours & everybody's time. The reason it may take 15 minutes to see a manager is b/c they're probably visiting all the other 50 diners who were making it seem like a straw dropped on the ground was the end of the world!

12. Stop taking it out on your server that the food you want (plus the extras) are expensive. It's not the servers fault. It's not even the manager's fault. Yes an extra scoop of guacamole, cheese or bacon may cost $ 1.00 extra. Take your issues & anger problems out on corporate, not your server or their manager!!

13. Don't always assume that your server must be gossiping or fiddling around if you see them in the corner chatting with another server. They could be asking each other for favors (Can you help me run this food to table 57---YOUR TABLE!!!) or (Hey, I'm new, can you help me ring up this new dish so I ring it up correctly?)

14. Read read read! Yes your server should be well versed on menu items, BUT there's nothing more annoying than a diner having an open menu but yet asking you about ingredients that are clearly listed on the menu if you'd just READ!

Yeah but we can say rude americans when americans go to different countries and fail to adhere to the 'rules' and be polite. The same thing applies here.

In general I think I am very adaptable and flexible. When I go to europe I try to catch on as quickly as possible.

Right, do your research. No harm in that. If you find out that servers in the U.S. are entirely dependent on tips, how can you rationalize not tipping them? They're just like you. They don't work for free. They shouldn't have to.

They choose that job b/c they had to & b/c they were depending on you to know the "rules." It's not their job to teach you etiquette. Learn it for yourself. And adapt accordingly :-) And if it's going to kill you to give an extra $ 5 to a person who just spent an hour being your servant, than perhaps you should've just stayed your broke azz home!

I would much prefer if servers made a good salary and tipping was eliminated. Until that happens, I tip well...also always in cash, don't make them report it.

If you skip out on your check, it comes out of the servers tip money. We carried wads of cash all night, at close you pay the draw for your cash receipts. Whatever is left is your tips. We didn't even get to discount the meals if people skipped out.

Ditto! It's astonishing how many people expect to make it obvious that they look down on servers, not tip them & then expect 5 star customer service!

Don't go to Waffle House expecting 5 star treatment! You don't go to Motel 8, expecting every room to come with a laid out Jacuzzi do you? LOL uuuuugh people make me so mad!

Hahaha! Hey Waffle House servers in my experience are some of the most down to earth folks!

Idk, I've always felt sorry for the servers that worked in diners where the food was super cheap. I know that people base their tips 10% on the level of customer service & 90% on the price of the food. I used to think, how in the hell am I supposed to make a living if all of my customer's orders are $ 5 or less?! WTF!

But I heard afterwards though that their table turns are faster, so it all evens out eventually anyway

"can I get a beer"

*awkward silence*

"You know a beer?"

"I know what a beer is, I'm just sort of waiting on the specifics"

"Just beer!"

*sighs*

Charge them for the expensive import and tell a buddy bartender to surprise you.

It depends. Cheap food also brings cheap customers. Fast turning tables can mean you just serve a bunch of people for free. I don't go out to eat much but I always tip at least $ 5 if I sit down and eat. You're exactly right, 15% of a $ 5 bill is only $ .75, you can't leave someone three quarters as a tip, that's just wrong. Plus if I can't spare a few bucks for the person who is serving me, I don't need to be served. I'll save my money and cook my own damn food.

I used to love bar tables the most! People naturally spend more money when they're drunk & enjoying a nice sports game. They're like "Sure, add on 10 extra wings for % 100 to my bill!" *Doesn't check the price b/c they're too fixated on the game*

Me: SCORE!!!!

Yes!

I worked in bar one summer, and often people would tip extra when their s/o was being as ass.

Thank $ 🙂

There was a time where I ran the bar and a few full dining tables at an upscale bar. Sometimes it would get so slammed and I would be so busy, but I loved the challenge of it...plus I made money.

I remember when I went for that job. I decided I wanted to bartend so I told the boss that I had all of this experience...but I didn't even know how to make a martini!!!!!

Lol I completely made up two bar names in foreign countries to land the bartending job I did

I think one was something even completely obvious like Casa del Vino... man, busting those tables in Madrid you know... I could tell you some stories boss. Am I hired?

I swear to god the manager atm hires like that. Keep telling me to run a training shift with the newbies, I'm a forgiving manager but if you don't even know how much is in a shot I wonder about those bars you worked at 😛

+1

But the euro-snob in me just thinks it's horrible that the good peeps in the service industry actually depend on tips in the States. To me the whole definition of "tip" goes against them DEPENDING on 'em! Over here it's just a gesture of sorts, at finer restaurants.

But having said that the service at our restaurants and caf?s is pretty fucking non-existant. I don't have a problem with self-service, that's what I grew up with. But sometimes it just makes you wonder, why are my tips included in the price if they can't even bring a coffee over to my table? Kind of ruins the experience when you have to do everything yourself, I can do that at home. I mean what are they really doing, just standing behind a counter? It's the sm?rg?sbord-mentality. Some places are better than others though, but sometimes it's like being served by zombies.

I'm a generous tipper though, I'd never make it financially for very long in a tipping-culture, lol. I know from prior experience.

remind why their base salary is so shitty again? i don't really want to be obligated to tip. if i tip it should be on top of a legit base salary.

Well b/c in this country, people get paid a variety of different ways.

Everybody doesn't make salary. Some make hourly, others make commission.

Taking it out on a server b/c their employer doesn't pay them enough is like purposely not buying electronics b/c you don't like employers paying them through commission.

At the end of the day, everyone has known forever that servers provide for themselves & their families through tips. Why be the only 1 in a bar/restaurant who thinks you're too good to tip? Unless you advocate for employers to stop paying their workers via commission, it's only fair for you to pay up for services if you knew going in that commission was the way they were paid

If you know that someone makes money primarily through tips, then you make do if you want their specific services. It's the same with all commission jobs. Travel agents. Cab drivers. Some car salesmen

I mean if you really think about it, there's nothing uncommon or unusual about many jobs who have employers that work primarily off commission. And if you want their services, you have to pay for the product & the service. If you don't like that, then don't ask for their services/products. Simple =)

I have always paid except once when the service was extremely terrible. The waiter was rude, took 2 hours to get food and it wasn't that busy and he forgot a lot of our order.

Other than that I tip generously. Hair stylist, other service people.

Its always been a huge pet peeve of mine when people are rude to service staff. I am really judgey about that. I don't like to be around people like that.

Right! Barbers & hair stylists is another type of work that people know to tip. When you consider that they have to pay booth rent & pay out of pocket for their products, you're $ 35 wash and style isn't really doing them justice. That extra $ 5- $ 20 tip makes a huge difference!!!

It seems that people need the kind of services where commission is a huge factor, the most! But yet they still argue with the aspect of tipping. If you are so against commission-oriented employers, don't shop there! Don't ask for their top notch services Sheeeesh

Same here. They tried to bring tipping the pizza man over here, pizza men start hanging around that 2 or 3 seconds longer after they hand you the pizza now. I just give them the look... on your bike, mate. ciao.

lol, the other door we ordered pizza, and the delivery guy called because he forgot which floor we were on. On the phone I explained to him that he needed to cross the courtyard to take a different set of elevators. He kept asking for clarification, and when I gave it to him, he cut me off saying "yeah yeah yeah already" and hung up on me.

Of course it took him a while to fumble his way to my door because he wasn't listening. My Scorpy answers the door, takes the pizza and requests a few packets of pepper. This guy goes, "Well, you should've told them when u called that you *require* red pepper. I don't feel like going all the way down to my truck to give it to you."

Mr. Scorp pays him the precise amount due. Delivery guy stands there for a few seconds and finally says, "That's it?"

Mr. S tells him, "Look buddy, I paid you the amount due. Normally I'd offer a tip, but I just don't feel like going all the way through my wallet to give it to someone who treats customers this way. Good night."

Then he shut the door in his face before I could tell him that I'd mention this on Yelp.

I hate this country's obsession with tipping. It produces self-entitled types like that deliveryman, or overeager bootlickers who won't leave you alone because they're literally desperate for tips. Just pay them minimum wage and fire those who fall short of expectations.

In Europe, because of lack of tips, servers make much less than in US. But then in Europe, a lot of people live with their parents in their 20's and 30's, get help from their parents, and have fewer expenses. A lot of Americans are on their own after they reach 18. In addition, I find rent to be cheaper in Europe than in US on average.

I have to be honest though, to OP, I have a bad habit of ignoring the cloches that falls off the hanger. I am just so lazy to pick it up 😢(

6- KNOW WHAT YOU ORDERED. How do you order food and not know what's in it? That's how you ran off with 3 ham, eggs, and cheese wake-up wraps when you ordered a plain bagel with veggie cream cheese. I even dictated the details, TWICE. With EYE CONTACT. HOW DID YOU CONFUSE THAT?!

Haha I love this. When bring drinks to a table I start announcing the drinks and I hate when they all give me a blank expression like they have no idea they ordered all these. Until I randomly plopping drinks on the table and they suddenly regain their memory.

As you said "next table" meaning you are talking about something that happens ***AFTER*** the service is over with, HOW can you expect a TIP for that portion of what you don't actually "receive", huh? That's unfair to expect the customer to tip on that when tipping is for *************SERVICE*****************, NOT for ANYTHING that happens **********AFTER YOU LEFT***********. Tipping is only *WHEN* you are there. It's not before you get seated that the hostess skipped you either. It's for ONLY WHEN YOU ARE SEATED, NOT ANYTHING BEFORE OR AFTERWARDS goes into the tip.

The mess you are cleaning, that's for the upkeep of the restaurant whether there is another party waiting to sit and honestly you even said "next table" meaning you aren't cleaning it for the people that dirtied it, you are cleaning it for the "NEXT TABLE" meaning that's not part of the party's tip that dirtied it. It's also not part of the next table's tip either since their service hasn't started yet since they aren't seated yet.

You get paid by your EMPLOYER $ 2.13/hr to clean and restock. That's why you get a wage to begin with and not nothing at all. Taxes everyone pays so that has nothing to do with this.

While I understand your stance, I used to work at a donut shop/diner back between 1998-2002 off and on a little over 2yrs worth altogether, which yes I at least got min. wage plus tips(I actually got a few small raises too(35 cents was my first raise, the 2 others were 25 cents). I made $ 5.15/hr when I stated min. wage at the time to $ 6/hr plus tips, which were around $ 20 a day during the week and on the week were around $ 10 a day since we had to split it between more people. I sure the HELL didn't EVER think I should get tipped for cleaning up or restocking. I don't get it why servers today think they should. Tipping is for ********SERVICE**********. It's not because I cleaned up someone's mess when they have left. If I cleaned something while they were still there, then YES I would expect to get paid for it since they are STILL in the "SERVICE", b

It doesn't matter I made the mess during the time, because you aren't cleaning it DURING my service, you are cleaning it **AFTER*** our service has ended.

Well, the only reason why they wait until after you leave to clean your table is because they are being courteous to you. They don't want to disrupt your experience. How would you like it if your server makes constant visits to your table with a broom and washcloth as you are enjoying your meal, and starts sweeping and wiping away? Will it make sense to tip them more then, since they are cleaning the (hypothetical) mess you're making during your service? I mean, I'm sure most servers would prefer doing that, as it would save them a lot of time later. But I'm pretty certain most customers would not appreciate that.

So the way I see it -- if your server would rather wait as a courtesy to you, then it makes sense that you extend the same courtesy to them and tip a little more for the extra work you know they will have to put in to clean your jumble after you leave.

Minimum wage and waitresses don't go together. People are greedy, especially Americans. Be it business men or the irs, someone decided that tips are frequent enough to be counted whether they exist or not. Technically waitresses are supposed to report tips. You add their meager hourly wage plus their tips. If they didn't make minimum wage the employer has to make up the difference.

Two problems with that. One, minimum wage isn't enough for anyone, that's why they're raising it to $ 10. Two, if a waitress actually claimed to be under minimum and made the employer pay more, they'd be fired.

Incorrect. It is illegal to make servers pay for walk outs. Any company that does this could get in some serious shit for it.

That said, this server of 8 years will compile her own list of pet peeves of the moronic public.

1. For the love of god, clear your SHIT when we come to the table with your food. The plates are heavy, hot, and it's just plain rude as fuck to sit there with your hands pinned to your side, claiming your food, but doing nothing about the plates, utensils, your phone, and other shit directly in front of you. Where the fuck am I supposed to set this thing? Move that shit.

2. As mentioned before, know your freaking order. It amazes me how many times I've gone to a table with their food, and get a blank stare when I call out what I'm holding. Come on, people, seriously??

3. Don't be that controlling bitch trying to do my job. Seriously, it's always middle aged women who sit there, try to control the entire table, order for others, and then fuck everything up. Your job is to sit there and eat your food. My job is the rest. I've also noticed these are the same women who fuck everything up and then blame the server for it. Maybe if you stfu, problems wouldn't arise?

4. Do NOT make your server stand there while you decide. Do not tell me that you're ready to order, then turn to the person next to you and ask what they're having. Or continue to stare at the menu, clearly undecided. I will not disappear forever, I promise. I have other tables and a lot of shit to do. Making me stand here while you decide is a dick move. Stop it.

5. If my hands are full, do not stop me and tell me you're ready to order right then and expect me to stay put. I'm clearly not able to take your order this very second. Let me drop this off, I'll be back. I promise.

6. Holy shit, control your fucking crotch droppings. Jesus Christ, the behavior of some of those hellions is absolutely asinine. Screaming, yelling, running around, making a huge fucking mess is just bullshit. Get the fuck off your phone and be a parent. I'm sorry you forgot to use a condom, but that is not my, nor other guests', problem. Get your shit together.

7. Follow up to 6, if your child is old enough to order for themselves, they better be polite as fuck. I had a 10 year old a few weeks back, talking to me like shit, demanding things, and shaking his fucking glass at me for refills. But the table was utter trash, so it wasn't surprising.

8. Do not shake your glass at me to signify a refill. Or snap your fingers at me to get my attention. Go fuck yourself and get some manners. Kthx.

9. If you come in with a large party, please expect a bit of a wait for food. 20 plates of food do not show up at microwave speed, I'm sorry to say.

10. If you come in on a holiday where it is extremely busy, do not bitch and moan about the wait time, the food wait, or any other delays caused by the sheer VOLUME of what's going on that day. Get over yourself.

11. Please remember that if you add a shit ton of cold creamer to your hot coffee, it will become lukewarm. Do not insist that I brought you cold coffee, especially when I know it was JUST brewed. I'm sorry you do not understand a basic concept that cold + hot = slightly less hot.

12. Do not ask if shit is "free." You sound cheap and tacky. Ask if it's complimentary or refillable. It also tells us you'll probably tip like shit.

13. Five dollars on a 30ish tab is not cool when your server kicks ass. It amazes me how often I see this daily. 32, 36, 37, etc, ALL 5 dollars. Wtf is it with people and 5 dollars??

14. Do not treat servers as serVANTS. I will never understand why people go out and treat us like we're some sort of peons. Bitch, I've got 3 freaking degrees and am doing this to get me by til grad school. We're working just like you do at your job. I don't come in and judge you while you do your shit, the least you can do is treat me with a basic level of courtesy.

15. And finally, DO NOT WALK AWAY WITH THE SIGNED COPY. Omg, do you know how many times we lose out on tips? You may have intended to leave us a fat tip, but walked off with the signed copy, leaving us with nothing. Leave. The. Signed. Copy. You do not need it.

cleaning up crayons should not have to be a priority.

Cleaning shouldn't be a priority period unless it is either a health hazard(such as vomit) or a slip hazard. Cleaning tables that have no one at them should be VERY LAST thought of when serving customers.

You clearly have no idea how restaurants work, so you should kindly shut the fuck up before you embarrass yourself further.

Incorrect. It is illegal to make servers pay for walk outs. Any company that does this could get in some serious shit for it.

That said, this server of 8 years will compile her own list of pet peeves of the moronic public.

Maybe rules are different where you are. That was from personal experience. I actually quit that bar because after I paid for the walkout, the customer was back in two weeks later and my boss wouldn't let me confront them and get my money back. So I walked out.
