To keep on doing or maintaining something that doesn't suit your needs?

For example, a close friend of mines likes to keep in touch with her old high school classmates and former work employees even though she's not that close to them, but maintaining those relationships has helped her gain status and connections with other people.

Me on the other hand, I only like to stay in touch with people that I call my friends. Everyone else is on the wayside. I do talk to them, I am nice to them, but I don't care to keep in touch.

I've seen how far keeping in touch with those connections have taken her.

Whenever I try to do the same, it's hard for me to feel like this is genuinely something that I want to keep in my life.

I think what she maintains is a networking system rather than in depth friendships?
She does both.

But often times that networking system is disguised as a "friendship". It's not just at work.

Like for example, she could be "friends" with someone and have that person be cool enough to drive her to the airport and bring doughnuts because they're "friends".
