Indonesia plans prison guarded by crocodiles for drug convicts

Indonesia is planning to build a prison island guarded by meat-hungry crocodiles for drug convicts. The reason for using the deadly reptiles as prison guards is that crocodiles cannot be bribed like human guards.

Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency Chief Budi Waseso has proposed the plan to keep drug kingpins isolated from convicted drug traffickers and users. Waseso, who has already sent his pet project to Ministry of Justice and Human Rights for ratification, is planning to visit Medan, North Sumatra, Sulawesi and Papua in search of the most ferocious type of crocodile to guard the prison island

Slamet Pribadi, spokesman of Anti-narcotics agency said:

"You can't bribe crocodiles. You can't convince them to let inmates escape.So when they try to escape they will be eaten. It’s not a human rights violation when a crocodile does the killing."

Indonesian Justice Ministry, which oversees prisons across the country, has not yet given the green light to the proposal

Indonesia has a hard line stance against drug smugglers and executed 14 convicted drug traffickers so far this year. Despite such harsh laws, drugs are rife in Indonesian prisons, and inmates and jail officials are regularly arrested for drug trafficking.

Indonesian government describes the country in a 'state of drug emergency' with more than 4.2 million addicts - or two per cent of the country's population - hooked on drugs. According to the authorities , 60 people are on death row in Indonesia, 34 of them foreigners convicted of narcotics crimes.

Earlier this year, Indonesian government's decision to execute six people, including five foreigners, despite international appeals had sparked criticism, with Brazil and the Netherlands temporarily recalling their ambassadors.

Me too. That aspect of it is fair in it's thought but the whole system is very harsh imo. It's basically like if you get caught and you're a foreigner, you're fucked. Yes, you shouldn't be smuggling drugs, etc but there is something very barbaric in the process.

it just seems like sooo much effort and expenditure over ppl who mostly just wanted to smoke something

i mean why is this only for drug offenders? so much other crime going on that actually affects others. and yea, if they're dealing to kids or are committing other crimes along with their drug offense, then throw them in prison, moat and all

what KIND of crocs? how can they be held species-appropriate? they can and do live in colonies when neccessary; for instance when there are draughts and water gets less and less but they can be fucking dangerous to each other as well. what about the nesting period? jfc. cause then the females go haywire.

and .... as they are cold-blooded; their metabolism is slow; and they do not really require a lot of food ....they hunt/eat by chance.

i think it´s a bloody stupid idea tbh.

and something else; of the 60 inmates on death-row 34 (more than half) are foreigners? WTF?

2% of the Pop. drug addicts ....?! mindblowing. just mind-blowing.

yea. now they'll prob just bribe the guards to slip them some food so they can make the crocs full and distracted, making it more possible for them to cross

nope. so I can't claim to understand what's going on. but crime that harms others happens everywhere, and each country has a responsibility to address the crime going on in their countries. so why any country should focus so much on drugs is beyond me

completely impractical, there is no guarantee the crocs will attack... For they most part they are lazy, and they don't' really try to eat humans unless they are really desperate. So the conditions these animals would have to live in to do the job would really come into question. I mean what crime did croc's commit to have to do time in prison?

The bribery actually starts from the top. Bribe a senior govt official to get clearance for shipment, bribe the people who work under that official, and on and on. Kind of like how it is in South America.

yea I get that. but that doesn't negate the fact that guards could just toss in a bunch of food for the crocs first and then proceed to make good on their end of the deal.

riskier? yes. but not impossible.

I don't see why not. I like to jump from couch to couch pretending that the floor is made of lava.

My initial point is - this is all bollocks. It's all for show. The govt doesn't really care about the crocs, nor do they care about the death row inmates, nor do they care about the guards who will probably have to work there.

maybe it's because since they're such a key gateway in the Asia/Oceania drug trade that they dont want to be blamed for the neighboring countries drug problems. now they can point at the crocs, throw their hands up and say, "well you can't say we didn't try!"

I think you guys don't understand exactly what's going on. It's a ploy by the Indonesian govt to appease international inquiries about their stance on drug trafficking/drug use.

Indonesia is the MOST corrupt nation of all the ASEAN countries. They say one thing on the front, and do something else behind the scene.

if western nations really wanted to protest, they could jut forbid any and all air flights from their country to indonesia, and I can guarantee you that indonesia would give up very fast.
There is a lot of hypcrisy on both sides

Personally I can't undertand how people choose to spend their vacations in indonesia , knowing that anybody could slip drug in the ir luggage and get them imprisoned or worse

I always worry about that when in airports lol

I felt pretty safe in SE Asia traveling with two girl friends (haven't been to Indonesia specifically tho). but u just have to be careful not to get ripped off. from tuk tuks that try to take you the "scenic route" to shady imitation cabs to random strangers approaching u with forced icebreakers (maybe they were just being friendly, but it just didn't come off as natural, so I politely excused myself), just be on guard and you'll be fine.

aside from that though, it's a beautiful and historically rich part of the world with incredibly warm and friendly people. def check it out 🙂
