It changes with each retelling, but the consistent details are that a girl gets a pair of red shoes. She tends to do something wrong, like wear them in places where they traditionally don't belong(originally it qas a church). The shoes force her to dance, and she's unable to takethem off. The story tends to end with her having tk get her feet chopped off, or her feet breaking off becausr of the continous dancing.
