I was with someone for years who came from Poland. His family lived there when it was communist. I can't even imagine but tbh I feel like I have a hard time trusting people regardless. It must have been a million times worse to actually live it for real....not just in your mind.

My generation doesn't have it cuz we were born one year before the revolution.

But our folks and the stories they share? omg.

There was this family my folks are friends with. At some point they had family over and also my folks. The tv was on as it was always supposed to be on when Ceausescu was live. So, being sick of his face and trusting her family and friends...she just said "let's turn the tv off. i'm sick of seeing his face".

A week or so later she was followed on the street, beat up and raped. After they let her go, the police officer went "You should get better taste in tv programs, lady"

It came to light that her godmother who was attending the party that day snitched to the cops.

True story. I can't even imagine how some people could go back to trusting others again.

Even through stories, there is that ghost there....

It's amazing how people heal though. Time passes, society changes..and we adapt once more. That resilient nature is our saving grace. And the adaptability.

^That wasn't as much part as the penal system..

The prison in itself was the playground for the experiment they had going on. It was very hush hush, same as people going to work over the Danube - Black Sea Channel..where they accidentally never came back. But that prison in particular stands above the rest.

Just to see how idiotic some people are, they tore it down and there's not even a museum for those people.

Few people survived and they wrote books. The one by Virgil Ierunca is the best, it details all the tortures they did there. And boy did they get creative.

^ That's the sad truth right there. Anyone accused of not being a party member/supporter often faced prison. 😐

It's why my parents fled. I was still a child so I didn't understand the paranoia, but from the stories I've heard I couldn't be more grateful we were spared that miserable life.

Many of my folks' friends managed to get out of the country too. I'm proud for my folks because they never looked funny at people who left or considered them having it easy. After the whole system collapsed there emerged a sad mindset of "we lived through this shit, others fled"..pretty much envy all around. It's just sad the mistrust it caused between people.

I swear the one thing that convinced me you were telling the truth about who you were, is when you were drunk as fuck, trying to talk about who was mafia. I was like if he was lying no way he would be able to keep it straight in that condition.
