Has anyone here used it?

If so, what are your experiences? And which group of interest are you flocking into?

Stories are welcome.

At some point within this semester, I know I have to go back out there. I'm too rotten now.

Please encourage me.
I didn't understand the thread.... What is it about?

There is this meetup community and app for people in specific region of area (worldwide has each meetups) to meet up and do whatever the organizers and members like doing. Sometimes it's just a casual hang out, culinary adventure, open trips, workshops, yoga or meditation classes, even seminars there. You can check em out at meetup.com

That sounds like a great idea, Aneema! I think you should go.... This sounds like fun. I think we don't have it where I live or if we do I'm not aware of it. But I do see adverts on paper for adventure camps like trekking, cyclin, etc where strangers sharing similar interests meet up! Some of my guy friends are a part of Super bike groups, they travel around the state in their bikes ?other than that I have friends who are in yoga groups ? lol

Why are you thinking twice about this? Is it not safe for girls? Idk I'm asking. Please join the group and have fun!

I've basically have been procrastinating and just hang out with same old peeps in my life. But i kinda wanna expand myself but I can be such an awkward, shy and reserved person so that's why. :/

It's a great idea that you wanna expand your circle....

Well I would say most people would be apprehensive about meeting new people...Mostly people who are shy and reserved that make better friendships, that are long lasting.

I think you must join a group and have fun. I don't see why anyone won't like you :-)

Like most social groups, it's great for passing the time and (possibly) having some fun.

However, many join Meetup not to specifically meet people, but to either have things to boast about on social media or to perfect a skill / interest (for aspirational or egotistical reasons). Ultimately, the other participants are merely a convenience for the self-gratification of others.

Is it? I do see that when it comes to those seminars, some sport and yoga activities.

But there are actually ones that seem to be pure socializing, like movie night, chill, etc.

So maybe take it grey area, I guess.

Tinder is super conservative in Asia and there is a friends groups option now
Really??

Ah I delete it anyways, why do i care.

Just wondering why doe
Yeah at least here

Too bad my 2km radius is 90% ladyboys coz I AM 2 km away from the red light district

Yeah like you can meet a group of friends now instead of a hookup

LoL. Cant be bothered by 2 km radius!

Anyways, maybe here too can apply tinder friend group. But i mean come on. We all know where it would lead to! Too much grey creativity goin on there.

Yes, unless the group is to specifically socialise with strangers, my previous post sums up Meetup (but some will still use such groups to bolster their social media content).

Yeah, that makes sense. I mean. Definitely people can use it for networking to promote their products or personas.

About you, tho. I think it must be all good since you have met friends through the yoga group. Two stones for one throw (I dont know the phrase for that). Healthy mind/body while making friends 🙂

And also, do you like cycling?

I'll try and remember the air bnb dinner app but it is like you get to have dinner with a bunch of random people and you just select the hostess or host and bring wine.
That sounds fancy!
It depends on the host of course but it's also a low key tax free restaurant when you think about it

So it's semi promotion for the restaurant ya..

Whaddo you mean by low key tax free restaurant? Is there a tax free restaurant, really?

Well you pay the host and he/ she cooks and sets up the dinner so she can make a profit without being taxed as a business and they don't necessarily need to have a restaurant

They could be failed restaurateurs lol or just someone who likes to cook

Ahh i see! So just to keep things going for the restaurants ya. I mean which restaurants would risk their name if they're already on the brink of closing the business. I can see that.

OR,

It can be like the selection of rejuvenation process for the restaurants, tho? Don't you think?

I've gone to hiking meetups.

Walking in nature is so therapeutic

and I've met some cool people.

After a long day hiking (8-15 miles),

our group goes out to dinner.

Nicee. You take up regularly ya? Coz usually they have regular schedules but Idk for hiking.

Hiking mountains aren't for me tbh. Can be very lazy and I don't want to whine along the way lol.

I think that's nice ya, real activity to form possible friendship bonds there 🙂

I'm grateful about Meetup, since it facilitates meeting new people and discovering new hobbies! There are many exciting opportunities in my town, wish I had more time.

I joined a local Philosophical Society group I found on Meetup almost two years ago. Been participating on their weekly meetings ever since.... the Existentialism starts next week 🙂!

Omg so cool!!!

I'd like that! Too bad here in my area there's not one made for philosophical discussions, or maybe I havent searched enough?

What have you guys discussed so far? Pick up one subject that you find the most interesting about. And tell me here!

As old skool as I am, I'm now still currently inclined toward essentialism instead of that newer innovative frame of mind. I imagine it would be perfect for digging to the core!

I used Meetup last year when I wanted to do something to get myself out there other than a dating app..since most of my friends are married and busy, and I had some free time on days without kids after my divorce. I did a night hike and it was great! Wish I had done it more! Ended up spending the whole hike chatting with a woman who was just divorced after 30 years and making a new friend. It was nice to have the company and do something I enjoyed that I wouldn't have just gone alone to otherwise. I'm looking at doing more of it as well..there is a ballroom dance class/group I want to try next. 🙂
Night hike! Sounds fascinating. How was it? Is it possibly dangerous tho because our sight can be limited?

Me time is truly important. Also helps you to get out of yourself too after the harshness of life, I presume..

Yeas I see dance classes too. Unfortunately their schedules here in my area doesnt fit mine. Was gonna go for salsa. Idk anything about salsa tho. You've been ballroom dance before or is it gon be your first time?

I'm selective with my hikes and prefer the ones that are near any body of water. 🙂

I usually go on a weekend.

Hat

sunscreen

lots of H2O

snacks and lunch

$ $ for dinner.

Body of water is a must for me too!

Think lakes and rivers, add them with splach of lush trees and breezy wind.. A bit of rain can intensify the ambiance

Desire! 😭

Here, I have to go outta town to get that view! So ugh.

I aint need hat. Lol even at the beach I would dare not to wear thorough sunscreen. That's too careless but just cant be bothered to waste anymore time to jump taste the ocean.

I'm a weirdo...I mean I make friends wherever I go... It is so easy for me to just talk to anyone who wants to talk to me 😡

I love yoga.... It has helped me a lot.

I used to cycle three four years ago.... Not anymore. Are you trying to get into a cycling group? Sounds like fun! There will be less interaction but you may get some fresh morning air!

Most of my girl friends made friends in dance classes/work out classes...

I bet lotsa peeps want to talk to you. So you must be busy. After all you're a gem, right? Always easy to talk to gem simply coz I dont need to talk much initially which is great for meh lol

Altho when it's too much, I would mind haha

So why arent you cycling no more?

Nono, cycling isnt for me. Nor jogging. Ima more inclined to volleyball, martial arts and surfin (even tho I'm still struggling there, always got a sense of about to die a.k.a drowning lol).

Which dance class?

Sounds to me like a high % of creepbag happening if there's an app concerned. I have met many pleasant strangers via festivals though. Probably the best way to do so.

I go to festivals often but i haven't actually form any further interactions with the ppl there. Maybe it's coz I always go there with friends?

Idk. I'm more positive about it. Meetup sets regular meets, so the chance to actually get to know other person is more likely.

The best way for me is always to go join communities. It's a sure fire for me.

Seriously na.... I mean it's like someone stops me to say something and i would end up talking to them for an hour 😡 lol

Nothing like that, I used to be a very happy person so maybe because of that energy... Idk Newman

Lol@Gems are talkative huh? I do have my moody days. Don't know about other gems... I love it when others introduce me to something new...

I was becoming lean I thought? I didn't like it lol...Also I was finishing college and taking up a new course....

Martial arts and surfing sounds like fun!! I know about the fear of drowning lol....Idk to swim at all but hey I can float! Imagine being brought up in an island and doesn't know to swim! ?

Most of them took up Zumba lol it's fun actually...

Well, you seem happy enough to me 🙂

now see, only gems can pull off that 1hr convo with strangers.

Yea I mean. When I'm on public transport, if the person sits next to me wanna strike up convo, depending on my mood, I can be open enough for talking to them.

Outside too, like while attending an event. But it's not like i will suddenly exchange number and say, "hey, lets meet again soon" and whatnot. Lol

Yeah me too. I love being introduced to new things as well. I'm always up for something new. Especially in the last few years. No matter how old I am, i think there's always adventurous side of me 😛

Zumba! Ayyyy like the music, they're similar to latin ya. But with more cardio moves, I think.

It was very cool! Peaceful. It was on the night of a lunar eclipse! It was a big group and everyone had flashlights, the guides also knew the area well so no issues.

Me time is important, but hard to do when you have been used to always being in a relationship. I'm trying to do better at it.

I did a couple Latin dance classes when I was married, for date nights and it was sooooo fun! I haven't done it since then but the Meetup group I want to do is for singles or couples so should be fun.

Well always good thing when the guide is around when you have the night walks. Or at least someone who has experiences around the place ya. Can't be bothered to worry and not enjoying the trip fully, right

Yes I get it when we have to accomodate our partners and so not having me time as much as I had prior. Luckily for me, I dont get into relationships that many times, maybe it's basically due to my need to alone time as well after all.

Sounds exciting! I hope there are some opportunities for me to have goid schedules for them. Joining dance can surely boost your dopamine, right.

Wait. Why not other classes. Hiphop dance! Lol
