A very old boyfriend of mine (my first boyfriend when I was 14 actually) recently added me on FB and apparently he's a "pro gamer" with MLG -__- thank god I dodged that bullet.
Do they get paid to do this? He has 5 kids nows :/

I was appalled when I saw "pro gamer" as his career status and was wondering if that was a real thing and if they got paid.

@Bri: alls good 😛 I'd have serious concerns too if they're going to base their life around a video game sometimes there's such things as TOO much! Should inspire them, why not be the dude who makes these games!
Intervention can be good. I had to do that with a friend (you can literally tell how long people have been on the game for) I don't think he's been playing since, found himself a nice girl and a great job and can't even get him to come back just for a bit of fun on the weekend!

Damn it I wrote out this response but lost it cause DXP was being a derp. But anyways. Yeah there is a lot more to life. I think people when they get addicted to the game especially to escape reality it becomes their life. It's quite sad. A lot of males more over than females. Day after day playing it for sometimes 12+ hours isn't my definition of a life.

With seven years playing in an MMO I can say most of the people I have met either at conventions or just in general have had some serious problems IRL.
For me it's not about them making more money than I do which is never the case. The only people that I know that are legit are people like Swifty, Reckful, Sodapoppin, etc. Which actually the last two I think they just got a gamer house in Texas with a few other twitch guys. Unless we see you streaming, being handled by your sponsors (yes they are pretty much around you the entire time with product placement at tournaments) you aren't in MLG. Unless he can prove otherwise I think he's just trying to impress his ex with his dreams of it.
Lets face it most guys pop a boner even thinking about going pro or being in MLG. But it's not easy seeing that every gamer known to man wants a crack at it. Everyone thinks they are a bad ass player. Its a super saturated field of baddies and some make it through and when you do you can prove it.
But again this is too much of a risk to rely on it for a constant flow of cash. The ones that do get chosen they will continue to have to keep up with every new game that comes out, be good at that, and continue it for however long they choose. Just because you're really damn good at PVP (which is the one that pays off the most) doesn't mean you're pro at first person shooters. Like I said it's a risk. I think it's a temporary gain that could be achieved if you are smart enough, good enough with public relations, independent self promotion, and just good with communication and business when it comes to your subscribers/sponsors.

My ex ran into him (yes the Scorpio I always talked about was a pro gamer in a top 10 world PVE guild *sigh*) at a few conventions and he was like "What a fucking douche" but then I was like "Um you're a douche too don't even lie". He thought about it and was like "Yeah cause he plays PVP" and I go "Well he probably thinks that you're also a dick because you have that whole top 10 PVE world shit". I dunno it was funny. But another friend of mine who I actually work with she met him also and she said the same. So im inclined to say hes a douchey mcdoucherson.
Oh and Swifty is such a toolbag. Have you seen his videos when hes water skiing? He's like "Yeah you need to apply yourself just like I am right now but do it in the game with pvp" Im like wtf LOL! Like totally showing off his bad ass water ski stuff and just being a general tool. Yes he's good but really? @Xin: Yep! That's another thing I don't miss about my old guild (top oceanic) there's just so much trash talk going on lol. It's even worse in FPS games it's almost like a psychological battle of sorts haha.
I'm sorta making myself believe Swifty and Athene are just doing it for show because if they really are like that IRL you'd have to wonder why they haven't gotten stabbed yet! And I have a confession I use to be one of those pvpers that thought pve took no skill until it taught me the valuable lesson of team work, it also taught me the social dynamics of kissing the GM and officer's ass and that when things go wrong blame the healers aka me lol!
As for the kid who broke his leg, my god, my Sag friend bursted out in laughter while I was just sitting there thinking "wait, did that really just happen?!"
