Is it just me, or does anyone lose all respect for someone once they get involved in one of these MLM schemes / scams?

Not to sound like a bitch, but I can no longer regard you as the relatively intelligent person I once thought you to be.

Examples:
Mary Kay / Avon
"It works!"
Doterra/ Essential Oils
Scentsy
Younique
Herbalife

Don't judge me in my pink Cadillac and my 50 pounds of cosmetics on my face that have been tested on animals!! :-P

I am j/k of course. I will admit I do belong to young living oils because I love thier product. I just buy for my own use. I also do raindrop therapy in my practice. I have been interested in Doterra oils but I am not interested in MLM.

YES.

Omg don't get me started on this shit.

I dropped a friend when he got into multiple MLMs. It's funny how he'd rave about his first one, then eventually switched to another and ditched the previous one. This happened with several companies.

I got tired of him hassling me. He asked me why I didn't want to try the shitty product he was peddling. I told him why and he turned right around and accused me of putting down the product he was selling, taking it all personally and shit. No matter how many times I said I wasn't interested, he would still hassle me and even tried to trick me into going to one of their brainwashing seminars. But I was the asshole because I told him his product was garbage and I had no interest. *cough*

I've had a few other run ins with people who got sucked into that shit. Brainless fools, tbh. If you can't see what a scam these things are, you're a silly bitch who shouldn't breed.

Yeah. There's no real way to politely turn them down. You want to be physically grab them and yell DO YOU HAVE NO SHAME?!

Well, to be honest, I don't really see a difference between those schemes and working everyday at XYZ Corporation. Both are structured on the "man/woman" on the low end of the totem pole busting their asses to send money up the chain to the "higher ups" who sit on their asses and reap the bulk of the rewards...and maybe just maybe that person on the low end will one day be able to do the same. The reast is really just nuance.

They don't. I'd posted something on Facebook about having a really long and craptastic day (the day my mom was in the ER, which was the beginning of the events that lead to her death), and a friend who was into Younique decides then is the time to continue her lame sales tactics in getting me to buy the crap.
"Sorry to hear that! I had a great day! I made blah blah commission, earned free stuff, and all while in my jammies!"

...I know she had no idea what was really going on behind the scenes with me, but I was like "REALLY?? IS THIS APPROPRIATE?" *facepalm*

Surprisingly enough, I was able to eventually get the point across to her that I was not interested. I think she may have realized why I was having a crappy day at some point and she didn't bother me anymore after that. I think it sunk in how shitty it was to do something like that...

Also, kinda random, but these mlm types are terrible to wait on when they go out to eat. I've come across mostly the essential oils, Mary Kay, and Amway, and they make any server cringe. They create the illusion of being business individuals who have some sort of class or money, but they don't. They're rude, needy, and don't tip for shit. ...then they have the audacity to either leave their business card or try to sell you shit haha.

Yes, but you're not pitching in your own money to make your sales quotas for the higher ups.

Normal work environment- you're getting paid hourly (or salary) to do x amount of work to make the entire company run.
MLM- you're putting in tons of your own time and money to make quotas in order to stay in the game. In turn, you hire more people below you to help make those sales quotas. If you don't, then they either take away your "chain" of sales people and give it to someone else, or they refuse to send you more inventory to sell until you sell/buy what you have.

So many people I know were taking money out of their own pockets to stay in the scheme. Ideally, it could work if you can find enough people willing to buy and stay buyers for the crap you're selling. But usually, that isn't the case. Like was mentioned above- you only really benefit if you actually start the company.

They ask for ranch don't they?

They ask for everything. On separate trips. And then want individual split checks on their party of 15. And then can't even leave a decent tip (10% or less).
"HERE IS MY CARD. YOU WANT TO BUY SOME MAKEUP??"

Don't care - why would you? Inconsequential.
So is a gay couple having sex in their own bedroom...inconsequential to you....yet apparently you care.

I care because I am bombarded with invites to their "parties"
You're going to equate a person selling Mary Kay cosmetics to a man sodomizing another man, and calling it healthy and normal?
Some real "looney tunes" around here.

Nope I was equating how much you care about something that is so inconequential to you - a man sodomizing ANOTHER man (not you, and no way involves you) - to your questioning why I care about a friend or family member getting involved in a pyramid scheme and trying to drag me into it.

Really if you want to get down to it....it isn't inconsequential to me at all....I have lost relationships over it. Have you really lost anything over a man fucking another man? I mean you wouldn't even have to know unless you wanted specifics

I know, and I see your point, but this is commonly how they defend themselves when being called out for being involved in and promoting a pyramid scheme.

It's the same people that get involved in these types of things over and over again which makes them even dumber imo.

They know they don't work...they know the last time they tried they lost money, which is why they quit....but they cannot resist the lure of the possibility they might be able to make money doing nothing but preying on other idiots.

And the whole thing is built on deceit (on topic for dxp right now). They only have a chance of really making any money if they get other people signed up and selling under them...so they have to lie about how much money they're making and all these trips they're supposedly going on so that people are convinced enough to sign up.

Do you guys have Nutrimetics over there?

Now, THATS the worst. You have to go to these boring ass home parties where you're told "no pressure" and "you don't have to buy anything".... Riiiight, so why are you shoving the catalogue in my face and rubbing that lotion on my skin telling me I really need it.

I let one my friends host a Nutrimetics party at my house once, we all had a facial. It was fun at the time... until the next day when I broke out in a rash all over my face.

Never again.
Haha we have very similar ones...never heard of Nutrimetrics but they're all the same!

Lol....well I feel like the people who do the pleasure parties aren't nearly as annoying and in your face as the others....probably strictly due to the nature of the items they are selling.
Probably.

The only qualm I had with the one I went to was that the rep was passing on shipping and handling charges on to us. It was bad enough she was already late to the party, but now she's making us pay for shipping and handling on items that were there with her.

Then I was able to find the same items on Amazon for half the price. Pfft.

Was still fun regardless. I'd rather just buy online or go hit up the sex toy shop. Those are always fun to wander around in.

You ever notice there's always that one weird foreign guy in the corner looking at the videos when there is literally an endless supply of it free online?

I think he's there just to creep personally
Can't say that I've seen that haha.

The thing that usually stands out is the cashier/clerk running the store. Totally laid back and has a good sense of humor. She took a suction cup dong and stuck it to the side of the counter just so people would bump into it as they cashed out haha.

I have two friends who I really respected.....I mean, I looked at these guys like...."Woah".....

Then one came at me with Amway and had the nerve to get pissed off when I said "No, thanks.".....I mean, REALLY pissed off, like I had just pissed in his coffee pissed.

The other came at me with *I can't remember the scheme* and stopped talking to me for a year because I politely told him I wasn't interested....lol

It's strange to me how these schemes can turn a pretty stable human being into a hot mess.
Yes! I really think they change because of the stress of living a lie...their only hope for making money is by pretending they are so they can convince other people to do it so they can make money off them....so as a result they become resentful of people for not buying into it and making them "rich." It's everyone else's fault they aren't making the money they were lead to believe they would

Not to mention the people who convinced them to sign up in the first place are pretending they're making all this money and their life is so great and so easy ...only further creating bitterness and false hope.

Would you rather them strip? I mean, seriously? Not everyone is going to follow the same beaten path, I know a girl that is a beach body coach and makes 6 figures. I know another girl that sells younique as a stay at home mom and pays her mortgage payment each month from her commission. I know another girl that sells scentsy and it brings in a nice amount of cash each month.

Whether you believe in it, it can make a lot of money. It's a hard to sell and be that annoying person on fb but I give props to people that are working and doing what they feel will help them.

Do you think of the guys that go door to door as MLM? I have friends that are managers for guys that do that, they mentor a lot of kids to get off the streets and find a life doing something better than selling drugs and such.

If I told you what my parents did for a living you would probably think less of them but we know how much they make. 🙂 I say to each their own and I support anyone that is trying to do better for themselves.

I don't think you understand. This isn't door to door. It's people turning into brain washed cult members and they try to shove this stuff down friends' throats, as of lately, via Facebook.

JAMBERRY NAILS. YOUNIQUE. DOTERRA. OMG RAWR SO AMAZING YOU WILL PISS GOLD, COME GIVE YOUR MONEY TO ME SO I CAN MAKE MONEY!!

No thanks.

"BUT..."

Fuck. Off. Damn. :/

Good for some if they can make it work, but for most, it doesn't.

I bought some AdvoCare from a friend and I did lose weight but damn the products costs too much. After I bought from her she kept hounding me to sell and to also purchase more products. Apparently if I became a sells rep she'd get a discount on the products and whatever money I make she would get a percentage.

I tried as nicely as possible to tell her I wasn't interested and I was just going to keep on eating healthier and then she got kind of pissy with me. She eventually got over it and stopped selling the products after she realized how much they were screwing her over.

Yeah these pyramid schemes make people believe there's good money but in the end they usually get screwed over.

I gotta love the arguments they use though. Most of which, are based on "blah blah corporate America, blah blah, you're making money for other people."

...and you're not?

At least I don't have to front money before I go into work. I just do my job, get my HOURLY pay (plus tips), and go home.

You have to front money, buy x amount of product to be considered a "distributor," try to sell the garbage product. If that fails, their solution is "hiring" people under you to buy your shit, and here, while you're at it, spend more money on marketing tools and seminars that will surely make you richer.

Now you're fronting more money to make shit work while barely having made a profit.

But the rest of us who have actual jobs are the ones losing and should take up your "amazing" opportunity.

Makes TOTAL sense.

A friend of mine was telling her about how her friend wanted to meet up with her and talk about some business she was starting. After she explained to me how everything went, I immediately told her it was an mlm and she should just avoid it. I asked her the company name and we googled it right there. Sure enough. I know now that she didn't bother after I told her to do her research, but the big catch with that one was that it wasn't that much money to put out, just like 4-5 bucks and I think telephone number? It had something to do with selling telemarketing services or whatever and they used your home phone for something, I think. She was contemplating it because she wanted to support her friend, but she ended up declining because she was how ridiculous it was.

They love to prey on the naive and desperate for cash.

If these people can make good money off selling mlm shit, they'd rather start their own business from scratch without all the shit mlm products, they'd probably earn twice as much money at least
