Saw was scary to me, especially when the old guy was behind the tortures. And the voice *shivers*

Most "scary" movies don't scare me, it only becomes scary when the villain is unexpected ie. an old lady/guy, or a geeky harmless looking kid. I loved "Wrong turn" too (not sure if that was the name of that movie thou). Those deformed killer hillbillies scared the shit out of me.

Evil Dead was ahead of it's time, but liked ED2 more.

Trivia: The scenes filmed at rapid speed from the POV of the evil spirit was really one of the Raimi brotherd riding around on a motorcycle with the camera mounted to the handlebars. Raimi nearly ran over Campbell during filming, and even rammed the motorcycle through the cabin door!

Army of Darkness was also good.

I crave 'mental stimulation' so I've kind of outgrown the horror genre, though I was nuts about it as a kid. Horror movies these days are not exploring our innermost fears, instead they are trying to convince you that you are scared by making you jump in your seat. That's not horror, that's just a cheap trick! And above all, they are too sadistic for my taste.

When I think of the movies that scare me the most, isolation and conspiracies are common themes. Having everyone against you has always been one of my favourite nightmare scenarios, I think I was the only kid in my circle who was truly taken by Rosemary's Baby, while most other kids my age would have defined it as drama due to the lack of blood and guts.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1977) and Polanski's The Tenant (1976) are two examples of horror movies that I actually find scary. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) also kept me up at night. There's something creepy about a monster coming after you with a big grin on his face. Also, the murders are truly bizarre, that's always scary. And let's not forget that soundtrack. Wes Craven sure knew what he was doing back in the days.

Psychological thrillers of the sort... those are worse, they keep me up at night!

Ah, I see. Maybe that's why you're such a smart lady 😄

For those like you who are into psychological artsy fartsy flicks, Possession (1981) is my standard recommendation. It's some sort of a DNA crossing between a horror movie and relationship drama.

Yes, European movies make you smart, all that reading!! 🙂

I haven't seen Possession, I keep it in mind for a rainy night. Thanks
