Gosh, I'm listening to this like it's the first time. As a child, I never paid attention to the lyrics... his voice and the music was so smooth, it distracted me from the lyrics.

Also, being a 70's baby... When this song came on, I thought, "Oh, they"re getting high again" LOL

That's funny I was thinking the same thing, you hear this song so differently as an adult. Saw them last summer at an outdoor venue, it was raining. Made their music so much more dreamy and significant...

"Oh, life is bigger

It's bigger than you and you are not me"

Losing My Religion

R.E.M.

--------------------------------

The object of the singer’s obsessive affection is not interested in him. The singer is trying to tell himself that this person is NOT the most important thing in the world, and that he needs to get over it.

These lyrics may also be speaking about the tension between individual artistic expression and the expectations of a fan base. The opening lyric shows Stipe’s intention to not let his fans define his identity.
