I think at 40.000 you shouldn't pay income tax. Only VAT through purchases.

However, this is typical left wing populism, no tax for under X amount. It leads into deficits. I mean, even with a full spread of taxation throughout the pay grades, western capitalist countries are in debt.

I'd imagine this could only work, longterm (read: no debt) in some sort of very well managed country, where the standard is so high 40.000 is lower middle class. But i'm talking of real 40k, not GDP statistics derived numbers which skew the picture (a fewer number of fabulously wealthy lift the average)

I think what you are saying ...is people on 40k should be bearing the main tax burden they are now in comparison to others and their quality of life should be on par with other people.

lol no, wtf...

These countries are in debt because they don't tax companies they don't tax high earners and these high earners scam tax

Most tax money is earned from high earners.

Corporate taxation or lack of is a problem, although i imagine you being from Ireland the problem was more visible.

But look at it this way....your government educated young people and then some US companies came and said, we'll employ all of them, regular medium level salary, just don't tax us much and give us some land subsidies to build buildings on.

It's a good deal for the government....some tax from corporate, some tax from income tax of people that work there and VAT from the things they buy with their mid level salary.

End of the day, it's not the government's job to provide jobs, but to provide a suitable atmosphere for job creation.

And then public money is fraudulently spent on public projects that hire private companies who have school mates on the board to carry out work the public sector itself is capable of doing. These private companies then avoid paying as much tax as possible. These people all go live in places like notting hill ...and then spend money in places like notthing hill ...making notting hill richer and more pretty....and the rest of the uk grows poorer

Ya, that's a whole another can of worms...

40k is chump change compared to what the average cost of living in the US is.

People who make that amount shouldn't have to pay a lot in taxes in my opinion. I don't care if I have to pay a little more to compensate for that.

I don't believe people should suffer because of their unfortunate circumstances. I grew up poor and I know how hard the people around me worked to provide a better life for me.

People who live in a bubble or have always had it good financially always downplay the difficulty of making it in this country in recent times.

When the cost of living aligns with average wage, then we can talk numbers.

I agree. Looking at tax stats in my city if you make 40k you pay around 10k in income tax 😢

I wish man 25% of income, not including other fees (medical, dental, gas, food, etc.) is way too expensive
