Worthy?

This guy that I had been talking to told me that most of his family had put their girlfriend or boyfriend though hell just to see how willing they were to put up with it, in a way, showing them how much he/she thought they were worth it all. What are your thoughts on this?

Sorry I should clarify... that people in his family usually put their own boyfriend or girlfriend though hell.
