So... we're all a bit iffy about this topic. At least here in Australia the papers love to make it a big thing when a person is dismissed based on their colour.

So recently there was a (I believe South African born) we hired at our work after unjust treatment at the previous job. I totally get it I do, I can't even start imagine the the immense pressure and prejudice as I hear about it hear from WC or others alike.

Thing is this person just isn't a good worker. The papers glorified him as a Barista but he can't make coffees for shit. Maybe he was discriminated at the other place but my god he should get some practice in as a barista before working anywhere that requires a standard in their coffees.

He got fired because he couldn't do the job. He got fired because he's a bad worker.

The problem I have is when the race card is played when it had nothing to do with race at all. The majority of managers don't even notice color, they note the quality of the work when evaluating employees. Then, someone gets fired because their quality of work sucks and it becomes a race issue and the media jumps in and sensationalizes it. I could care less what race/religion/sexual orientation/etc. they are - if they're a good worker, they're a good worker and I'd be proud to have them on board.. If they're a bad worker they're a bad worker and don't deserve to keep their job. That's all there is to it.

Apparently the story goes he was refused because the owner of the previous cafe said their 'clientele' wouldn't like a black person serving them coffee. I admit it's a pretty bullshit thing to say especially for this area. But after observing his skills in front of a coffee machine or just general hospitality, for me personally it's taking a bit far.

From my perspective he's now given the shifts that most people want and is given more hours than people want. Now that to me is unjust. It's almost gone the opposite way whether he intended it or not. Just because of one incident he is now being treated above everyone else.

Don't care how much of a story this is. If it takes him, 24 minutes to get a small flatwhite out to a customer then there's a problem and I don't care if he's taking photos for the article. Take that shit elsewhere.

And yeah thanks wagtail he's Brazillian. Sorry if it was confusing I had like two different lines of thoughts when I wrote this before going to work lol. It's gone from racial discrimination to racial advantage.

Yeah definitely. I don't blame the guy he's probably just very openly assertive and vocal and speaks his mind and you know I appreciate the whole "step up for yourself" mentality.

Time will tell if he can fit in here. As my job ranges from stationing at he kitchen, espresso machine, cocktails, point of sale to floor. If he can handle all that then he'll fit right in, he'll also have to wait in line til I train the other new staff.

Maybe a part of me is too cynical. 10 days after arriving here in Sydney. I've met backpackers that hands resumes out every day for weeks and work their little hearts out to secure their job. In my world fairness is skewed.

Also pardon me for sounding so meh about this. Head Office is already grilling the management team about hiring staff and training procedures and there's NOTHING I can do about this because the business owner decides to showcase charity and snatch this story up as a publicity stunt. I've already spoken up about this because I follow this Brazilian's philosophy of not taking shit.

Guess my stance didn't quite agree with the company.

I'm sure the animosity is directed at the company so far and not him. If anything, AS a barista, I also take pride in my work. If he had to pose for photos knowing he had a job to do then yeah I'll call him out on that regardless of colour.

Also no, this area isn't like that at all. It was one incident with that cafe. Darlinghurst is an area home to the gay and lesbian community if there's anything we know it's celebrating being human. We don't want to see him fail at all. The opposite is true if you really see the story for what it is that this area isn't tolerant of that behaviour and counters this by vandalising that store.

In saying that I can't see this past being a charity case. We get people from different races all the time being turned down due to lack of skill required and he became the one exception. Take it perhaps as a social commentary when things are out of control much like it's politically incorrect to call a "blackboard" a blackboard.

Yeh didn't that brazillian end up getting a job at Copa cubano— it suits him anyway because its a south american lol..

Omg I used to live in Liverpool st behind Forbes and Burton and I always used to get coffee from there on my way to work and I was so shocked that the owner had done that because he was awesome but I found out the it was taken over a year or so ago by a Chinese man lol..

Asians are the some of the most racist people out there lol??_??_To be honest I think we're all a little bit racist and this guy is more stupid than he is racist.

What kind of Australian doesn't understand the meaning of fair go?
