I plan on going back to school to further my education. I want to be a business owner, preferably working with dogs and then getting into food

I dont ever want to work a 9-5 again. I feel trapped. So I must make way. This can't be it for me, it won't!!!

Any advice? Have you started ya own? Did you fail or succeed? What did it feel like?? What would you have done differently??

Being a small business owner is way more than 9 to 5. I owned a cafe/bar for about a year. It was a long time ago. Hospitality is especially long hours, weekends and public holidays. It's zero sick days and stressful because there's a hundred things to consider from permits, to produce and inventory, staff, bills, rent, insurances, work cover, loan repayments, websites, marketing, POS, book keeping, health and safety logs and a whole heap of unglamorous shit like cleaning and dishes.

I'm not sure about working with dog businesses as I've never had or worked in one of those. I imagine the overheads would be relatively low depending on what you plan to get into. Mobile dog grooming for example, you'd have to think about funding the set up but once you have everything in place, ongoing costs would be manageable and the hours would probably be fairly flexible. You don't have to commit to being open certain hours and can work by appointment which would be a huge plus. Working as a dog trainer you would still require insurance and stuff but otherwise very little capital. That type of business would be a little to no risk, however you would likely need some type of qualification which shouldn't be too difficult to get.

I wish I thought harder about it instead of being so impulsive in my decision to buy it. I was in my mid 20s and I thought it would be much easier than it was. It was an awesome experience and I learned a lot but it was the hardest thing I've ever done. No sleep and hardly any time to eat so I wasn't looking after myself. I wish I had more money and started with somewhere small and not so expensive but I went big and smack bang in the middle of street where rent was $ 5k per month. I managed to cover all my costs and get by but looking back it was so risky. I also wish I had a partner because doing it by yourself is really hard. I didn't borrow much or have accounts with suppliers so paid COD for all my stock. I never owed suppliers money which kept my books manageable. I was lucky that I sold it and that covered my loan and left me with a bit extra in the bank but a lot of people borrow way too much, run up huge supplier accounts and fall behind so they end up losing everything. Be mindful of that and be careful with running up debt. I know a few business owners who fell behind and couldn't catch up and lost their houses or went bankrupt so you have to crunch your numbers and whatever you think you need to start, you need double. Try to put as much of your own money in as you can and borrow as little as you can or do something with low overheads.

It's very brave and exciting to start your own business and there is so much to learn and experience from it. Talk to other business owners in the field you want to get into. Read some Industry magazines, go to industry expos and workshops and try to get as much exposure to your chosen field as you can.

Good luck with your dreams. I wish you every success and I hope you do awesome!

Pet food?

What level of education were you looking at? I know of people who only had basic education (only finished up to Grade 8) who managed to get somewhere successfully in their businesses, but not after learning from working for other people for years.

Yes. I built my own business years ago.

I learned so much because I never thought I would have it in me as I am more of an artistic person than a business person. But surprisingly what I was dreading most was the part that I enjoy the most.

Finding the perfect place, doing the business plan, the painters, the look of it, the suppliers, the advertising... all that is was involved.

The running of it was the boring part.

Well in general, when it comes to booksmart, I'm barely making it lol. Thank God my virgoness saved me with intelligence lol. I want to at least have an AA or BA just to survive out here. Maybe in accounting or business. Skills I can apply to life.

When you say your sick of a 9-5 do you mean the structured hours? Or just working 40hrs in general.

Cause I'm sorry but realistically you'll be working 60-80+ hrs the first few years starting a business. Then IF its successful you can scale back on time and hire someone to run it. Big if. People go under all the time...

Excuse me but WHAT??!!

Im not going to read all the responses

Third generation entrepreneur...

Owning your own busines is your LIFE!

Every moment of every day you were thinking about it. You will make sacrifices financially emotionally your friendships relationships in order to invest back into your business if you want it to be successful. You need to be driven, you need to be organized, you need to understand how marketing works and you need to understand how finances work and you need to understand how to build a brand. You have to balance your people skills, your trade skills, and your business skills to create a successful small business. You need to understand insurance, your local laws and codes.

Be prepared to work long and hard for little to no profit. Its like having a newborn, it comes first.

I come from parents who had a VERY successful business, my husband and I ran a successful company and I recently started a new one.

Its no walk in the park...

This, right fucking here.

I had my own LLC a few years ago. I thought it was going to be easy. Little did I know that I would only work and sleep 24/7. And by sleep, I mean 4 hours a night.

Sure the profit was nice, but I never got to enjoy it, when all I did was customer service, inventory control, pack, ship, and travel to pick up imported goods.

I couldn't do it, and I went back to a regular 9 to 5.

It's a per week number of work hours. Regular week has 40, somewhere 35. So...she is saying to the OP she will have to work more.

You must be an exception then. I'm not a business owner, but i do know one or two and it's the same story everywhere. Business is your life.

In fact i know of a woman that is thinking of getting out of the caffee business which she owns because she thinks it's just too much hassle. I tell her pls no, because that's the place where i get coffee on the weekends, but idk....

Get a Business degree. Save $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ . Research and make as many connections as you can that will help you now, and in the future. Keep a journal of ideas handy, so you don’t forget them.

Be prepared to sign your life away until things get up and running, and even after that. It takes a few years to get settled in a routine and to work through all of the kinks, and even then there will always be something to deal with. I’m able to work from home now, but that doesn’t guarantee that I won’t get a random call at 6am and have to get out of bed and drive up there to handle shit. I wouldn’t go into this thinking that you will have to work less. It’s extremely time consuming but equally rewarding and I wish you the best of luck! Drink lots of coffee 🙂

What do you have for a business? If it's not too much to ask (if private just ignore)

getting up at 6 am to solve problems sounds hospitality related :O

It’s fine I’ve mentioned it here before. I own a feed and pet supply store. We do business with a lot of farmers, but also get a lot of locals too. Also offer other stuff and carry local products from people trying to get their product out. We recently acquired a medical marijuana grow license.. So that’s what I’ve been working on right meow. Lol

Just remember, the best sellers don't consume their merchandise. 😄

Also, if you'll ever be in the market for selling pumpkin seed oil (for salad), i can hook you up with stuff that sells for 300€/bottle in Arab hotels. Ofcourse it's a fleecing and the real price is much much lower, i just used this example so you see it's not something weird. :O

Op is starting a buisness now. Not 30 years ago.

Starting from scratch. And going back to school. Not gonna have the funds to hire a team unless she left out the part about being a trust fund baby.

So she is the labor.

Majority of people who start buisnessss from scratch in this present day and age work crazy hours and pay themselves very little the first few years.
