So I will be up all night because my son, while at a birthday party with his godfather, he ran around a swimming pool and fell in. His godfather grabbed him out quickly but when he came home he was very tried and fell asleep mid sentence about being hungry. Now he could just be very tired because he didn't nap today, and he played hard today between us going to the park this morning to water/bounce house play at the party. However, with dry drowning stories being brought up so frequently, I am in a paranoid state checking his breathing every 10 minutes.

Has anyone ever experienced or know anyone who has dry/secondary drowning? This is probably one of the scariest concepts to me as a parent.

Wtf... that's scary sh¡!

"Symptoms of dry drowning usually happen right after

any incident in the water. Secondary drowning generally

starts later, within 1-24 hours of the incident..."

"Both events are very rare. They make up only 1% -2% of

all drowning incidents, says James Orlowski, MD, chief of

pediatrics at Florida Hospital Tampa.

Symptoms

Dry drowning and secondary drowning have the same symptoms.

They include:

Coughing

Chest pain

Trouble breathing

Feeling extremely tired

Your child may also have changes in behavior such as such as

irritability or a drop in energy levels, which could mean the brain

isn't getting enough oxygen.

What to Do

If your child has any signs of dry drowning and secondary

drowning, get medical help. Although in most cases the

symptoms will go away on their own, it's important to get

him checked out.

"The most likely course is that the symptoms are relatively

mild and improve over time," says Mark Reiter, MD, president

of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Any problems that do develop are usually treatable if you get

medical help right away. Your job is to keep a close eye on

your child for the 24 hours after he or she has had any problems

in the water.

If the symptoms don’t go away or get worse, take your child to

the emergency room, not your pediatrician's office.

😢 I feel your pain. Scariest thing ever. Dry drowning is basically like acute pneumonia caused by water in the lungs. Did he cough noticeably after the incident? Any wheezing? I am a worrier and anytime I'm concerned I sleep on the floor in my sons room. No shame in my excessive overprotection.

I wasnt at the party with him so I didn't get to truly examine him but he isn't coughing now and breathing seems normal but it just freaked me out because he fell asleep too quickly then it was hard to wake him and I asked him if he felt sick and he shook his head no and I asked are you just really sleepy and he shook his head yes. Also the vein in his neck is pulsing maybe im just noticing that because I am worried though. Gonna keep listening to the sound of his breathing.

Listen to your instincts. If anything seems off or concerning take him to the ER. Hugs and positive vibes!!

Unless it's not affordable for you. Then I'd just monitor him until he exhibited clear symptoms that something was wrong.
Sorry, that's a big ol nope. The article outlined above said to observe for 24 hours, but it's rather concerning he's showing some of the symptoms already, so she should be heading on over to the ER to play it safe.

ER is way cheaper than ICU anyway.

She mentioned that her son was playing hard that day and he never had his nap, which is important for small children to have when they are that young. That alone tells me that he is probably okay and he was just sleepy.

If he had a significant amount of water in his lungs, chances are he wouldn't have been able to keep up while playing because his lungs would have been struggling to deliver oxygen to his blood and that would have caused him to be slower and more winded than normal.

If that wasn't the case and he was just exhausted for no reason, I'd be inclined to agree with you.

Kids get tired though. Thats not worth a trip to the ER plus a hospital bill especially if she's already struggling financially.
