Without Harming Yourself...

I need to lose 20kilos ASAP coz at the moment i look in the mirror
and i just feel depressed...and i carry that depression into every other
area of my life 😢
I walk every night, I try to eat healthy and for the main part, i do.
I have a very mentally draining job so im always "Shellshocked" when i get home.
I take vitamins anyway, not that they seem to do anything...

I know if i tried something and saw a difference, that would encourage me to keep at it...

Walking is great exercise but to be honest if you're looking at losing a decent amount of weight then you need to do some serious cardio.

I tend to put on weight easily so I work out 4-5 times a week where possible. Lots of interval training, cross-trainer, bike, treadmill.

If you hate the gym I find circuit training classes fun, and a few of my friends go to Zumba which is some sort of dance exercise class. Yoga is a great way to lean yourself out too. The trick is to find something you enjoy and that works for you. I did a bit of kickboxing when I was younger, found that to be a good de-stresser.

"I have a very mentally draining job so im always "Shellshocked" when i get home"

I know the feeling! I try to go to the gym in the morning before work if I can, or on my lunch break - luckily the gym I'm a member of is right next door to where I work.

To be honest it sounds as though you're lacking motivation more than anything else, probably because you're so drained from work. I find even when I feel wiped that a good workout energises me - keeps me sane too!

Find a mate who is willing to do it with you as that always helps - the hardest part is actually just motivating yourself to go.

Good luck! 🙂

I would have to disagree with Ms. Pirate. Sorry sweetie .....cardio can actually make you gain more weight. It is one of the fastest ways to plateau.

Dogsbody - It is a noble goal to loose 20 lbs. It did not show up quickly and it will probably not go away quickly. The best way to explain this, is our bodies are a science lab. When working with clients I do a mix of a couple of diets Metabolic Typing, Eat Right for your blood type, and I am a fan of the paleo diet. Weight loss is 95% diet!!! One of the first things I do is try to get clients to stop eating sugar, reducing carbohydrates, additives food coloring and flavoring, high fructose corn syrup products (SODA), processed foods, and definately get off the fast food chain including Starbucks. I am a big fan of the Paleo diet. Go back to eating like a caveman (real food). I also encourage clients to eat as pure and clean as possible which means know where your food is coming from. Organic vegetables (no canned, or frozen those have preservatives). Meats should also be clean. They are pumping the cows and chickens with hormones which you are injesting causing all kinds of problems with your endocrine system throwing hormones off balance. I have also started doing functional diagnostic nutrition testing and finding out any metabolic imbalances.

If you came to my house, you find my cupboards empty or filled with herbal supplements. My fridge is empty as well because the food I eat is real and it will spoil if it is in fridge for more than a week. They have been saying for years stay away from animal fats, butter, saturated fat. What we need to stay away from is all this processed crap!!! (Vegetable oils, corn oils, canola oils are all chemically modified). Our bodies were never meant to consume this synthetic stuff. I preferably use coconut oil daily for cooking, I consume a tablespoon of it to help with weight loss and it keeps the flora inside you clean. The reason why is because our livers can digest real foods more easily. All this synthetic crap is taxing on our liver and digestion. Leading cause of disease.

So that is pretty much the paleo diet. The blood type diet is pretty dead on. There are certain foods that do well for certain types. i.e. I have never been able to consume dairy, rich cheeses, milk. It is horrible on my digestion.

Blood typing diet:

http://www.dadamo.com

Metabolic typing again is similar to blood type diet. Your body could be craving more protien and maybe too much glutten could be causing endocrine issues, digestion issues, etc.
https://www.metabolictypingonline.com/Default.asp
Need to learn to eat better which means it will require more planning on your part. Making sure your meals are planned. I swear to God you will feel so much better, even by just starting the paleo diet. http://paleodiet.com/definition.htm<BR>
I can do the Paleo diet but my body does need carbohydrates which I get from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. I also eat them sparingly and as organic as possible.

I know I have given so much. Weight loss, health, is a change of life. This is not something you practice for 12 weeks and than go back to your old way of life. Try the paleo diet. It is easy. Shop on the outside aisles of the store. Forget about the frozen section or aisles in between those foods are usually full of additatives and preservatives. I swear to God you won't even have to step foot in a gym to loose weight, however I don't recommend that. Shop at the Farmer's market this time of year.

A great work out will have a diverse weight training program. Please don't be one of those people who goes to the gym and spends a full hour on the treadmill. You are wasting your time and energy. I like to do interval training:

Example of work out for a cliet:

Day 1
12 min cardio - 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints
Legs 3-4 sets - Squats, lunges, deadlifts
Stretch

Day 2
12 min cardio - 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints
Arms 3-4 sets - bicep-curls, tricep head bangers, lateral raises
Stretch

Day 3
12 min cardio - 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints / 1 min slower spd 3 min sprints
Core 3-4 sets - Pull-ups, Wood Chops, Planks, incline sit-up with medicine ball
Stretch

Day 4
5K Run or Yoga
Stretch

Seriously it is all about going back to basics. Give your body the nutrition it is craving for health. I hope some of this helps.

Anyway, I suppose the point is people have to find what works for them.

The cardio (interval training) I do has really worked for me. I never struggled with my weight during my 20's but being in my early 30's now I've found that I have to work harder to keep in shape.

Completely agree with the whole eating right thing, but for me personally it's about a balance of both - diet and exercise I mean.

It works for me!

DB try and learn something like a martial art....TKD, kickboxing, you wont feel depressed anymore....those kinds of sports teach u discipline and for men its kind of like a therapy because it helps burn off steam

It is very important that men have this outlet to somehow physically express themselves......because inside us all we have anger....or in ur case depression which can be converted into anger and makes a perfect fuel...

you may feel helpless now and unhappy but take comfort knowing that you can be happy by beleiving in urself and leaning a martial art...

seriously please do it.....you can learn so much about urself

I've been doing low carb for about 2 months and have lost 40 pounds, I'd say that's pretty good. I don't even exercise and lose about .5 pounds a day and my stats are much better. I just eat non-processed meat, vegetables, drink water, and take vitamins.

of course u dont do any exercise u dont have any fuel to burn.....and how do u get full without eating carbs?

look eat what u want and work twice as hard is what i say!

u need to be like a big giant rock that gains momentum its slow at first but it keeps going and then nothing stops it....the feeling is soo good of being strong....I remember when I was a kid i thought that I could run for as long as i want but id just get bored so i didnt truly test the theory........its good having an invincible feeling..being able to say I can do this or do that......when I saw people doing martial arts for the first time or dancing as a kid It hurt because I didnt know what it was like to do the things they could so at first i taught myself and my mum then got me into lessons and training...and that really gave me an edge and discepline.

I eat plenty so I have plenty of fuel coming in. Right now I'm about to have a big old chicken breast with lots of veggies and lots of olive oil on top. And I get full plenty from protein. I'm actually much LESS hungry now. I used to eat many times a day, now I just eat a few big high fat moderate protein meals and I'm good to go.

Eh, I've always preferred the motto, work smarter - not harder. To each his own.

We ARE referring to weight loss here, right? Because I thought that was the subject of this thread? I agree that you need to work hard if you want to build muscle by weight lifting, but weight loss alone is easy as hell and pretty much comes down completely to diet.

Hows your diet? Strangely enough, whatever your target goal is, whether its weight loss, bulking up, getting cut, is 60% diet, 40% training, generally speaking.

I keep on seeing these comments on websites about how losing weight is just as much a matter of exercise as it is diet and it's just not been my experience. Of course, my idea of a proper diet is lots of unprocessed meat and veggies, not grains and other junk the human body did not eat but for the last 10,000 years...so maybe that's where the contention lie, but I honestly haven't had any problems losing 40 pounds of fat by simply eating right. Even my muscle percentage has gone up and feel stronger.

I agree that exercise and weight lifting is necessary if you want to build muscle mass and improve your health, but for simple fat loss, I just ain't seeing it as necessary at all due to my experiences.

You definitely need exercise to avoid being a skinny fat. Although I'd say maintenance of your weight is more a factor of what diet you're eating.

If you're eating a high carb diet, I wouldn't be surprised if you need to resort to exercise to keep from gaining, your BMR has been lowered and that means that since you're eating lots of high carb foods, insulin is still being raised a whole lot, so you're still prone to fat gain. It's difficult to gain fat on a low carb diet even without exercise though. You have to eat a whole lot to gain on a low carb diet. Of course, in the end if you're eating a diet your body was designed for naturally and weight lifting, I'd say you've got a major edge in keeping fat down and gaining muscle.

The way I lost most weight not that i really needed to lose any was low carb, and it took no effort and no exercise. I was eating about 1800 calories a day (minimum), lost half a stone in a week, never put it back on, and looked and felt great. Could exercise and lose even more but I'm lazy 🙂. Oh and it increased my metabolism as my body was used to burning a high amount of calories, and my choleserol is perfect. Just because your low carb doesnt mean your eating a fry up every morning! you can grill meat if you want to, not everything has to be deep fried.

And to repeat myself the OP said QUICKEST! If you have a large amount of weight to lose and want to keep it off that involves a life style change not a diet. If you have to exercise to lose weight then you will have to continue exercising for the rest of your life to keep it off.

Everyone is different, dear. You have to keep that in mind when it comes to low carb/high protein diets. It works for some and not others. Everyone's body is wired differently, so you have to take into consideration one's metabolic rate, if their hormones are working properly, etc, as well as their life style and exercise habits. Just because it worked for you, doesn't mean it'll work the same for everyone else. I've slacked off tons on my old exercise routine and haven't had any weight change because MY metabolism is crazy and I'm fortunate enough to be a skinny bitch. I know if I didn't have that, I'd be a little chubby right now.

Btw, 1800 calories is not that much of a cut back. If you're lazy, don't exercise much, then 1800 cal a day is what you SHOULD be having anyway (max). It'd explain why you didn't gain it back. Caloric intake should be adjusted based on one's activity level. If you took in more than that before, AND were lazy, then it'd explain why you dropped weight like you did. You were ditching excess calories.

Yes 1800 calories is not much of a cut back which is why it was a great diet for me. Lost half a stone in a week by cutting back 200 calories a day. That is how I lost the weight not how I maintained it. And nowhere did I say thats how it works for everyone I was just sharing MY personal experience. I was just explaining that as soon as everyone says "low carb" everyone instantly assumes that everyone is eating butter by the block! and I know all about motabalism and hormones etc, I have an A at Alevel in Human Biology.
