AND

I would probably let him initiate that reconnect to be honest... But you preempted with a text, he responds, makes a concentrated effort despite possibly experiencing severe depression to allay your concerns and you - after getting what you ask for ie more attention, punish him with some possibly passive aggressive coolness

and let's be real starting out with a rather subtle threat that despite the fact he has some serious shiz going down you 'weren't going to wait around' - might come across as less than empathetic.

I'm not sure really, maybeh one of the Leo lads will pop in with something more... direct...

You sound like a lotta maintenance. If you can't be supportive from a distance then it's best if you move on and let him do the same.
