Oh like strict parents.. dad wants him on the varsity team and for every fumble he gets his ass beat...for what.. so everything comes down on the kid..because now the kid has to do a great job and later resents people like his dad.

You do realize things like this have been happening since the dawn of time, right? While it's certainly a horrible tragedy, let's not act like this is phenomena of the modern era.

Everyone's surprised by school shootings for example. But there are school shootings dating back to the 1800's.

Crazy people are going to do crazy things and crazy people will always exist.

Each and every time is horrific to hear it. I am not as desensitized as you may be. Just because it happens more frequently than we'd like it doesn't mean we should get used to it.

I agree with Rabbit that human nature is the same way. And somewhere in that human nature there are deviants..either through environment or born this way. Science cannot assess which one of the two has more an effect on behavior. Is it upbringing all the time? I don't think so.

However, we have more means to do damage now as we did in the past.

On the other hand, the media is all over the place so these events taking the forefront on television paint a world where everything is going to hell in a basket. This is not all the world has to offer but there's more focus on this part than the other.

Crime is actually decreasing in the world. But we can only judge living in our times and cannot have an unbiased perspective on a long enough time line.

It was the mother of 7 of the children and her own niece. She has now been arrested having failed killing herself. Her older son of 20 found them all!

It always seems to happen right on the verge of Christmas when there is a lot of pressure and extra financial stress to provide. One rumour I heard was that she was struggling to be the sole keeper...

That was horrific 11, I only read 1 account of a survivor and what he had gone through pretending to be dead so he was left as the gunman was shooting all the bodies around him making sure they were dead, sole survivor in his class. And against innocent children sends a strong HATEFUL message!

A mother killing her own children...god knows what she was thinking but it is always a crime where you want to know and understand why and how she could.

The minute I heard she was the only survivor, I knew it was her and the pictures told the story as NO ONE was at her side when they took her away.

I went to read up on it and she has been arrested...for those crimes. She must have needed serious help before getting to that point. How does it get missed?

Just pointing out that the people of Torres Strait islands and their communities are traditionally extremely family oriented and child friendly.

Irregardless of number of fathers etc children are taken under the family wing.
They are in fact considering the drug Ice as the main culprit here, and she turned to religion recently - not Muslim by the way -Christian.
Also in terms of "diversity" comments, Torres Strait is basically Australian satellite. They are considered Indigenous.
She had mental health issues (the obsession with finding God, banning of all technology in the house etc)and it was a tight knit community, she isn't some sad dole bludger... I lived in Cairns myself for a while. I am familiar with the area and lived in an Aboriginal Mission just outside Cairns for some time myself.

'Culturally' it is not the norm up there for this to happen.
Maybe in other parts of Aussie-land and of course across the board these things happen in certain demporaphics- in spite of racial backgrounds in some cases.
