Nobody freak out, this isn't some crazy fuck troll racist thread, but I know someone's going to go apeshit on me, so whatever.

Legit observation-

During the time I've spent here, I've noticed there is quite a significant group of black users here. I'm not sure how many hail from the States, but this is directed mostly at them.

Legit question-

This is one that I've always pondered in the back of my mind. A good portion of the African American community in the States is Christian, largely Southern Baptist.

Generally, most religious people I know don't really follow astrology much, or they just flat out don't believe in it, especially Southern Baptist (at least all the ones I've come across).

That said, those of you who consider yourself religious, what got you into astrology and/or why do you believe in it? How do you mesh the two ideologies and do they conflict with each other?

Are some of you even all that religious to begin with and that's why you're into astrology?

Did you used to be a religious individual and as you got older, strayed away and just consider yourself agnostic in a sense?

When I see the numbers that I see here, it's kind of surprising to see those, who generally come from a heavy belief system, into astrology. It's always made me curious as to the reasons or influence?

I think if you want to use the word black to describe a race you should capitalize it. A race deserves a capitalization.

@OP

you already triggered someone OP. ur asking questions thats just gonna hurt our brains. its much easier to just accuse you of being racist or looking down on black people. you racist

You're ridiculous and so is the person you quoted.

LOL why is it ridiculous to say that if you are going to use a color terminology for a race, to then capitalize it.

Enumerated races divided by color are important and to use a capitalization just shows respect for the race itself.....or maybe the US Census is just totally wrong 🙂

You cannot correctly spell Hispanic or Asian without a capitalization.

It's just a suggestion.
She capitalized African American in the title.. You really gonna dissect her entire post to find where she is not using proper capitalization? :/

she didnt dissect the entire post tho. she just looked for a trigger and lashed out

Was raised in a Christian household. It never felt right to me, organized religion that is. I got into astrology by seeing my horoscope in the back of Seventeen magazine, when I was a teen and started looking more into it. Went to the library, got all the astrology books and it all started making more sense. My mom on the other hand thinks it's devilish and bullshit. Lol that's another story though.
Haha devilish.

Do you consider yourself religious anymore? Are you one of the ones who grew up and just kinda are "meh" about it all and consider yourself agnostic?

I think race is a big subject within dxp, regardless of astrology, simply because dxp is very multicultural.

Also, I've noticed a lot of religious undertones along with astrology.

Just an observation.
There totally is. It's a belief system that's existed longer than Christianity.

Pretty much. Her attempts to be intellectual are lol worthy. She just needs to stick to her expertise of Zoloft and cockteasing DXPers.

She's trolling the fuck out of y'all. When Rocky is serious about a post she stays with it. 10 comments and no reply from Rocky means she left that post and watching and laughing at everyone going apeshit over yet another race topic.
No she's messaging me stating how ridiculous dxpers are when she creates a serious topic and they try to troll it.

Go away.

I am a non denominational Christian. The systems of categorization in astrology have always interested me as it seems the personality breakdowns tend to be spot on... though open for wide interpretation.

All in all my faith in Christ is more or less solid. I do observe the restriction on divination as my guiding light For that subserves Christ's daily urgings to move with him and the order to not lean solely on my own understanding.

As far as reconciling my bits of "faith" in Astro with my actual faith in The Trinity is an easy task for me. Even though I myself would in no way consider myself into true mysticism the Hermetic saying "As above so below" makes much sense to me in the Christian faith as all things do flow from the Father and his creations. Even if my faith would say those of other faiths are out of covenant with God I do believe that the in held lust to seek the higher power or understanding of the world around us leads all to come to some understanding of the Father and his nature even if the lens is in my opinion skewed.

So long as I am careful to relay all praise and glory is given unto God and anything taken from man's understanding is prayed and meditated upon in consort with the word and more importantly the Holy Spirit...I ultimately do not have an issue with Astrology.
Do you think that being non denominational is why you're more open to this type of thing? Or was it upbringing/the church you attended and how they taught the faith?

No, not religious at all. I guess you can say I'm agnostic, truth is I really don't think much about it.

My mom used to tell me that it's no longer up to the parents to decide what the child believes in at age 12, then she was upset with my decision. Lol. Astrology makes sense to me, religion doesn't, but I still respect others beliefs.
My mom tried with us (and gave up haha). My dad grew up in the church and was an altar boy or something, but he was whatever about religion by the time he became an adult. My brother and I are just agnostic- same as you- also respect other's beliefs.

I think Astrology may appeal more too because it's based in human behavior and the like, whereas religion is a belief system based on outdated texts. The overall message most preach is a good one, but as time goes on, it starts to not apply to the evolution of human behavior and the like. 2000+ years ago is nowhere near what it's like today, you know?

But then again, people can also use it to their own interpretation and "update" it in a sense, I guess. Some do, actually, which is cool to see. I think some religions would get less bad rap if they had more progressive individuals preaching. You can still get the same message across and not be outdated, I'd think.

It sounds horrible, but I was curious about this topic myself.

Where I grew up, white people either seemed to use religion as a crutch or a stick of superiority to beat others with, to feel better about themselves. The black people I knew seemed more true to their faith. Like... the real deal. Was genuinely curious about how that coincides.
Exactly.

Tbh, the Bible Belt ruined it all for me. Really extreme stuff with some people out that way.

If we'd stayed here growing up, I'm sure it would have been much different.

I got into astrology when I found my leeb moms copy of that Astrologer Linda Goodman (?) Love Signs. I would run to the basement to read it whenever I got a new crush or new friend lol.

I am a Christian and attend church that happens to be baptist (I don't consider myself baptist tho, just Christian). I feel very conflicted about astrology and have prayed to God many times about it. I actually made a long post about this already in one of @malloryor posts on faith.

Basically I accept that I have certain vices and have asked God if he stronger and more powerful than astrology than to show me by bringing certain things to pass that would go against my chart. For example, I have debilitated sun which can mean having children late in life and asked God to give me children sooner if astrology was not real, and so many other things I have prayed to God about.

None of my prayers have come true and my chart always is true. A part of me thinks astrology ( interpretation of the sky) is not totally devoid of Godliness. But I dunno, I'm too addicted now *shrug* hopefully God forgive me for my sins.

As much as I grew up with God I grew up w astrology too. God must have brought that book into my life when I was a child for a reason.
Omg didn't we all?? Haha. "I like so and so. What sign is he? OMG ARE WE COMPATIBLE??"

That's another thing that's always intrigued me. You get the Bible thumpers who are just SO stringent in "God and nothing else" and you'd think, this all powerful being, one who created us, would want us to explore the world around us, learn to interpret the world around us in varying ways, all while staying true to Him.

I think that's why it's always been curious for me because you think "Baptist" and "rigid" comes to mind.

Those of you who were raised in Baptist households who were heavy on religion, is that also why you started looking into other options or were more open to them?

You see this happen a lot with Catholics. Some are just, "omg I can't" and run away and end up being agnostic or look for other denominations that aren't as strict.

I think there is a severe lack of understanding on DXP as to what constitutes an offensive thread/post/question that has race as a subject. There is a right and a wrong way to do it. OP's post doesn't wreak of loaded questions and statements...nor is she begging a question.

Talking about race isn't in and of itself offensive...especially not to people of color especially not to most Blacks that i know. From experience most tend to be very literate in identifying offensive thinking based on race as opposed tojust general curiosity from folks of other races.
YUP. It's why I had to put a stupid disclaimer. There's quite a bit of comprehension fail on this site, as well as within our society as a whole.

Social justice is ruining everything. People can't even have legit discussions about culture and religion without someone getting offended for someone else. :/

Lol decidedly not. My home church has as many dogmatic zealots in it as any other. I think if anything it's the closeness of my walk with God that allows me to kinda see dogma for what it is and push past it.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I don't discard accurate or useful information even if the source isn't right about everything.

So it's more like "omg these crazy people. Eff this, I'm doing my own thing!" haha.

It's sad that's why religion generally gets so much shit- the extremists and rigid individuals who just hamper...everything.

Though it may be a good thing- it gets the independent thinking individuals out and taking the good bits of it all and putting it to use like it was intended, which evolves all of it, which has been going on since it all started, if you think about it.

I would strongly disagree with that notion. Honest and frank conversations about race happen routinely and often as a part of the movement. It's not that you can't go five seconds without offending someone on race...it's that many in the mainstream especially white men which epitomize privilege of identity at the end of the day do not know how to navigate the conversation about race because a tremendous amount of energy is spent trying to ignore it instead of untangle in its entirety the legacy of racism that was created by their forbears.

A whole bunch of privileged classes are for the first time in history being required to consider the rights and lack of care given to folks who have traditionally been relegated to inferior roles and statuses in society.

And when you have been used to getting treatment and privileges for no real practical reasons when the scales begin to balance equality will feel much like oppression.

You may not see it as such but a forum which allows for erroneous views on race and culture to be aired and shot down...is working in favor of the movement not against it in the least.
I didn't mean that aspect of social justice. I was referring more about the white priviledged men leading it being the ones offended for those who aren't even offended. I know I could bring this topic up with most Black individuals and doubt I'd get much backlash. I've asked culture specific questions before because I see trends and patterns when I work with the public and nobody got offended because it was a legitimate question based on an observation of consistent behavior.

It's the white, privileged types that have made everything so hypersensitive that people are almost afraid to address these issues because SOMEONE will get offended, not necessarily the culture/race involved. THAT is ruining everything because in turn, there are people who are afraid to broach these topics. I was internally cringing when I wrote this because I knew it could go one of two ways- sane discussion, or raging craziness, and it's sad that my expectation was leading toward the latter. I was careful in how I wrote my post and STILL someone got all cuntastic about something incredibly minute- funnily enough, a white person.

Keep in mind, it's the rich, white privileged men, in San Francisco, leading the movement who are dictating what minorities and women should be upset about, what's PC for them, etc.

As per usual, it's something with good intent being ruined by asshats. 😢

I know tons at church that take the religious thing too far!! One girl I know refuses to watch Harry Potter or read or watch anything with witches or wizards in it bc of supernatural element. It's ridiculous to me, like you're that impressionable!? Most ppl (only my bf) really know how into astrology I am.

I didn't grow up in a baptist household, but I def know what you mean!! Some Christians act crazier than the psychics!! Have you seen that show Hollywood Medium Tyler something?? I want to see a medium sooo bad but I don't really trust them, but he seems legit so maybe some ppl have the gift.
The big turning point I had was when I was in middle school. We were in PE class, and two girls from my class asked what church I went to. I told them I didn't go to church and the looks they gave me... it was as if I had two heads and told them to go buttfuck eachother.

I remember being so wtf and wondering what the fuck their problem was that they were being so uppity and snotty about it because from what I learned about religion from the family was... that's not how you do it haha. But then again, California is SO much more laid back compared to the south when it comes to religion, so that probably had a lot to do with it.

In regard to her reasoning of "supernatural" element, wtf that doesn't make any sense! One could argue that the Holy Spirit is a supernatural element, so she's contradicting herself haha.

...why do people gotta go and ruin shit?? Religion, across the board, basically has a similar message- live your life as a good person and be good to others and don't be an asshole. ...then you get people being assholes and ruining everything, all hateful, and wars, and persecution, and blah. :/

I wonder how much shit people get for looking into astrology when they do come from religious backgrounds? Chox already mentioned her mom throwing "devilish" into the mix. I'm all thinking Happy Girlmore's mom status here as a reaction for some haha.

It's a decent point to make there is tremendous pushback in this era of the movement against white-washing and man-splaining. Among other erasure tactics by individuals and groups to preserve privilege or dilute the truth to preserve privilege.
That's my biggest gripe with it. As a society, we're all still struggling to get away from the rich white guys running the country and controlling our society with their tactics to stay in power/have the upper hand.

People of color and women need to pay very close attention to this shit because if it keeps going at the pace it is, we're all going to be backpedalling more and losing the rights we all gained in the last century, which is what they want in order to keep control and keep their power.

Is this question just for African Americans, or anyone who is religious, but into Astrology?

That's what I'm saying. It could apply to any race yet she chose to single out African Americans.
