+1 on "not for everybody".

Best-case scenario, each dread should be the same size & rather than clumped together forming one massive uni-dread(disgusting)and not all messy/frizzy at the roots.
I feel as though black people with dreads follow the upkeep rules more diligently than other races, based on dreadheads I've known & seen in passing.(Or perhaps other races just don't dread their hair properly to begin with.)

If you have silky, stick-straight or thin hair, dreads are going to look utterly ridiculous.

Without following those guidelines, it is virtually guaranteed that you will resemble a homeless crust punk.

Even if you keep 'em neat and orderly, there's still a fair chance you'll be taken less seriously, and you may be viewed as "unemployable".

yea, I have stick straight silky fine hair...dreads aint happening here, lol

Are you getting dreads for a spiritual reason or for a trend? Either is fine, I'm just asking

You technically DON'T have to cut off all your hair if you want dreadlocks. There are LOC EXTENSIONS that you can get. Basically you buy Marley hair from the hair store & a stylist will use the weave to wrap around your own hair until it gets to the length that you want.

Your REAL hair will grow with the weave hair & you can easily take the weave hair out once your own real dreads are to the desired length. Loc extensions are not detectable. No one will know they're fake. Don't believe me? Google "Loc Extensions" & click on "images." You'll see thousands of pictures of folks of all races with them & you'll be amazed at how even you thought they were real.

Don't be fooled. A lot of the people you see walking around with "long luscious locks" actually have in loc extensions. Again, your real hair (long or short) will naturally loc in with the weave hair & will grow on its own. B/c you can buy the dreadlock weave in virtually ANY COLOR, this is why it's common to see the people whose dreadlocks have highlights. They didn't necessarily dye their real hair underneath the dread weave lol They bought the hair in that color lol

The purpose of the loc extensions is for people who:
1. Don't wanna cut off all their natural hair & go through the years of the "ugly faze"
2. Aren't sure if dreadlocks are for them (which is why they try the loc extensions 1st)
3. Are wearing the dreadlock style as a trend as opposed to an entire life style or spiritual change. (This is why you can take them out if you want)

Dreadlocks aren't as high maintenance as other natural style s. All you need to do is keep your scalp oiled & moisturized. And every 6 weeks or so, get them re-twisted so all your new growth won't look a mess. There are entire aisles at hair stores dedicated to dreadlock maintenance & care. I've had them before & I never got any weird stares. Everyone loved my locks & wondered how long it took for me to grow them 😉

I think they can be very beautiful if they are managed properly. They are not for eveyone, looks wise. Personally, I find that they look best on black people. I suppose it's their hair texture (although hair texture can vary, it tends to be curled tighter than other races) that makes it easier to lock and look better. Idk.

The common misconception is that dreadlocks are primarily attributed to the African American culture. NOT TRUE. Native Americans started the dreadlock legacy, & from there its spiritual meaning spread all over the world. African Americans were actually 1 of the last ethnicities to grab hold of the dreadlock culture.

It doesn't matter what type of hair you have (fine, kinky, naturally straight, naturally curly, etc.). If your hair can technically be braided, then it can be locked. The misconception is that people with fine, naturally straight or silky hair can't get dreads b/c their hair will come untwisted or unraveled. Not true. If you use the right products, anyone with ANY type of hair can train their hair to lock.

I was amazed at all the myths about dreadlocks once I did my research. It's NOT the "look" itself that may cause discrimination or judgement. It's the SPIRITUAL implications behind them that make some people dislike them. The stereotype is that folks with dreadlocks tend to live their lives carefree...defiant...hippie style ...marijuana...literally carefree. So again, the discrimination isn't coming from the appearance of the locks themselves...it's about the history behind why people started wearing them.

Now that more & more people in the U.S. are wearing dreadlocks as a TREND, & not for spiritual implications, they have become a lot more acceptable & even envied by onlookers.

I love how this style looks, but Im too chicken to go for it (since that would be RIP to the natural hair....I think u have to chop off ur hair to get rid of them if you get bored of them).

Apparently you don't have to lose all of your hair (depends on your hair texture though). I've seen a few women work it out so they had a decent amount left e.g. chin length) after removing their dreads.

Not my style . I've always wondered what people with dreadlocks do with their hair when they take a shower?

They take a shower. What do you think they do? I don't fault you though, I think the same thing when I see Indian people with hair up to their ankles. Aren't they afraid to trip & fall while taking a shower?

I know a Punjabi guy who is a Sikh & according to him, their religion/culture doesn't allow them to cut their hair. He now looks like Rupunzel because his hair is sooo long when he takes off his turban. Makes me wonder how he manages to get all of it inside a turban in the 1st place. That must take serious skill!

What I'm about to ask is going to sound so wrong and is a sweeping generalization, but hey, I'll bite...

Why is it that most(nonblack)women with dreadlocks, are lesbians 9 times out of 10? EVERY white chick with dreads I've met, just so happens to be bisexual or ghey, emphasis on the latter...and loves Ani Difranco.

It's also generally assumed that if somebody is not(apparently)black and has dreads, they must be a diehard pothead. Although there are exceptions to the rule(black stoners w/dreads)this stereotype is CERTAINLY not unfounded.

Trust me, those ones always know who to call when you're looking for a zip 😈

No offense, but the stereotypes you have within yourself about dreads is the reason many people are afraid to get them. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people with dreadlocks in the world. When people believe that all hundred thousand of them must be a pothead, gay or something else that society considers "negative," it makes me mad b/c that's just simply not true.

There are more potheads, gay people & violent people who DON'T have dreadlocks than there are that do have them.

I'm not mad that people without dreadlocks don't know the history behind them. They don't have a reason to know if they've never wanted them for themselves. However, it's disappointing when people subconsciously discriminate against them even though they've never done their research 😢

I've always wanted dreads, but my Gemininess won't allow them. I have to change the way I wear my hair based on the mood of the day, and dreaded hair is pretty much worn "up" or "down" and that's about it.

I've dated 3 guys with dreads, though. All white guys.

You can do more style s with dreadlocks than you can with most other hair style s. People assume they're all stiff & barely movable.

Shiiiiiiiit just watch the crazy things people in different cultures do with them! Their hair can twist, turn, do handstands & just about anything you can think of when their hair is dreaded lol

Relax. I said they look better on AA people. I know people get dreads for plenty of other reasons.
