Its a Japanese Spider Crab. I saw a couple up close years ago in an underwater world. They're huge and can live up to 100 years.

are they edible? 🙂

Of course. A crab is a crab. I would imagine we'd get awesome meat from those legs.

Interestingly enough the public opinion seems to be mixed. I came across a page praising it to have the sweetest meat of all crabs and then a forum with a few people saying it was a bad experience. Granted, one of them was only watching a drunk friend bite one raw while it was still alive so I'm going to assume it all comes down to the cooking process.

I gotta try some for myself someday.
