What films have disturbed you or inspired you recently..perhaps the two are one and the same for some..?

For me..only God forgives was utterly gruesome..?? Think I only watched 15 minutes of it in total..

On the flipside..citizenfour a documentary should be the standard in terms of filmmaking..fucking the level!

The most depressing film I ever saw was Last Exit to Brooklyn. Not one redeeming character in the film, although you sympathize with the prostitute and the closeted gay guy.

"A Serbian Film". So disturbing

..documentary?

It's an actual movie. It's about a washed up porn star who takes an offer to do porn, but he finds out that they want to do snuff and pedophilia. It's horrible.

Oh fuck dat..sounds about as fucked as it gets.. How these mofos get funding..

I have no idea lol but I found out about that film here on DXP from an old similar thread lol

Yeah. I thought it was going to be a raw, 50's retro movie which was fine, but more along the lines of "Streetcar named Desire". But it was just "Mean People with No Hope or Direction".

In the depressing category:

I was going to bring up "Faces of Death".

Schindler's List

Inspirational (but not in the way you might think):

"Dancing Outlaw"

Two nods for faces of death..might reserve that for a sunny day..??

Dancing outlaw looks good..

When I was a child I remember seeing a move I think was Asian horror that was really fucked up. The only part I really remember was a girl being possessed and cutting off her eyelids, and I think a part where someone was cutting off their own flesh. I can't remember what it was though.

It is not about NZ All Blacks, lol. The movies underlying theme is about Larry Gelwix, and the way in which he coached his teams, but it's not an 'in your face' theme, so it leaves a lot of room for less biography/documentary style content and feel.

Oh good..that would of been very un-kiwi of me to of never heard of it..??

I shall see if I can find a copy of it on the interweb..

The same way porn film companies get funding. Interested parties with lots of $ $ .

Tbh, Serbian film isn't for everyone. People who are used to Hollywood style horror/sci-fi/fantasy probably won't be able to sit through it. Hence why it's banned in a lot of countries.

What I liked about Serbian film was, the depiction of the dark and scary aspects of the porn industry and how sick humanity can really be.

An honorable mention, for those of us who've had to live with and deal with family issues - this film can be considered disturbing.

An uncomfortable watch. Meryl Streep on point...made me wanna throw a plate at her..??

It's probably safe to include Stephen Kings 'Sleepwalkers' for disturbing... unless you find the incestuous relationship between nomadic, shapeshifting energy vampires who feed off the lifeforce of virgin women to be commonplace; that is.

stephen king..the mantis!

Disturbing because it actually took place....and gives the audience a peek into the fragility of human nature.

Have you seen The men who stare at goats? Has mind control themes to it but more of a comedic approach.. It's about a guy who created 'the new earth army' aimed at bringing peace to the earth and its inhabitants.. He was even given military consent to implement this programme back in the 60's I think..

Thanks all.. I've watched 2 movies so far from the lists above. A Serbian Film ??... sick and The Stanford Prison Experiment.

Pretty sure I saw Antichrist but a long time ago, so watching that now. I love William Defoe.

I might watch The Men Who Stare At Goats after.

Disturbing: Off the top of my head I can think of 2 Leo films that disturbed me, or more were just very upsetting for me to watch..

Blood Diamond - I couldn't handle it when the RUF put guns in the childerns' hands and turned them on their parents.

The Revenant - When Tom Hardy killed his son.. that was as far as I could watch 😢

Inspirational:

White Fang (although this movie had some very sad and disturbing parts as well)

The Grey

shit yes..watched the revenant recently..first time I actually understood the power of bears..uggh..that scene fucked me up..??quite a dark film..came back from the dead..
