I loved this film actually.
If you know about Michael Keaton's career time line, you can see how he played his role so well - he was basically acting as himself. Even the part about him quitting the Birdman franchise cos of his disillusionment is tied in with why he quit Batman after doing the second movie.
This movie will only seem weird if you have not had any exposure to the experiences that actors/musicians go through - the processes of character development, the ups and downs of the industry, the sacrifices they have to make in order to 'get somewhere' in their career.
Everyone I know who works in the performing arts really loved this film because they could relate to the characters 100% .
I suspect that's probably why this film won - because the peers who voted for it probably saw bits of themselves in the characters.

I stopped watching it half-way through...
It wasn't solely because of the film itself, but largely because I absolutely have no interest in movies that are about 'behind the scenes of a theatre production'.
Many of us know how obnoxious, catty and screwed-up these people are - I certainly don't need reminding again.

lmao.
that's why i was kind of "shocked" at the film and why it got rave reviews.
if that's how filmstars/theatre folks are, in real life, gosh, no wonder. So many people wanting to have different sexual partners and there's no fidelity in the movie/film industry.
i'm wondering, is it really that bad— they all want to be loved by everyone?? yet have the lacking to love themselves??
No? Not all theatre folks are like that. You're just generalising based on what you saw in the film.
Actors like Ed Norton's character are far more common than Keaton's character - the sort who feels more comfortable on stage than in real life.
And it's not so much a lack in loving themselves but more a case of loving themselves so much that they forget their loved ones i.e. Emma Stone's character and her relationship with Keaton's character.
He was so wrapped up in his pursuit of proving his worth that he forgot he had a wife and daughter who loved him.
And I understand why Emma Stone's character was so enamoured with Ed Norton's character. off stage he was vulnerable and non-sexually promiscuous. On stage he was an egotistical bastard who somehow managed to get a boner from the very idea that people were there to watch him play a character.click to expand

but gosh, it seems like the "inner" world of an individual whose entire career is based around his life in the theatre/movie star:
