Because I didn't say it back....I loved him for some time but kept it to myself and now I feel like I had the opportunity to tell him how I felt. I'm dissecting because I don't want him thinking I don't or thinking I rejected him by not acknowledging it when he said it. I froze and changed the subject.

IF you follow the natural flow of your feelings, you would have responded in a likewise manner through imitating the way in which he said it...
When you feel the time is right for you to say you love when it is heartfelt then you will say it but say it because you want to and not because you expect to hear it back in return...
Loving someone is about being able to give, but let that person say how they feel in their own time and not to automatically expect you to say something back.
