Sounds like he wanted you to know without coming right out and telling you - like he wants to ease into the confrontation instead of it blowing up in his face.
That's a excellent way to start some shit. Short of admitting some strange kind of involuntary cheating and tell your s/o, any other reason is asking for trouble. As a test. It's immature and manipulative. You risk undermining the trust in your relationship bring into question that should never be questionable.
I am totally bias in this because the woman I have dated are usually possessive or something of that nature to begin with. The idea of doing that seriously makes me shiver and cringe at the same time. F that!
