Promiscuous does not mean simply having had many partners and it isn't tied to being in an official relationship either. A single time of it and yeah maybe they were just desperate at the moment. When it becomes a recurring behavior pattern... Slut. The type that goes out frequently and just takes home the first warm body they find.
Just say "NO" to sluts. It ensures no random chancres pop up.
I would use the term for any man or woman that has multiple partners with no intention of settling down. Someone of loose moral character. Definitely for either sex who would engage in relations with someone known to be in a relationship. That's a two-way street there. They're both sluts. One for cheating on partner, the other for not giving a fig for anyone elses feelings other than getting their own rocks off.

I understand your point but you make it sound like science lol but when you don't think about it as deep, when it's who people who are clear on what the 'relationship' is based on, both have same intentions and don't want or expect more, should either be labeled as a negative word when the relationship is positive for both people who are involved?

By the way, I never said "slut" was a negative word... I just gave my definition of it. It is not something I would do, but if someone else wants to do it it's none of my business.
to me, a slut is:
- one who engages in sexual activity OUTSIDE of their committed relationship, especially when they are dishonest w/their partner about it.
- one who has sex with another's boyfriend/girlfriend when they KNOW he's/she's in a rel (not an open one either).
- one who goes beyond a one-time deal and willingly allows themselves to become a "thing on the side" is a slut, regardless of rationalizations.
- as others have said, someone who will sleep with anyone whom has the preferred genitalia.
- one who uses others for sex while being dishonest about their intentions.

HOWEVER - it is easy to arbitrarily apply the label of "slut" to a female to attempt to diminish her self-worth and worth in society.
i think what it comes down to: if no one is being hurt (either directly or indirectly, openly or covertly) and the sexual relationship (or relationships) is (are) serving a beneficial purpose, then there should be no "slut" label involved.

The only time I'd see it negative if it was something affecting others somehow. Or hell, even affecting the person in particular. One girl I know could easily be labeled as a slut. I would think that two consenting adults should be able to have sex at any time without it being considered slutty, if this sexual encounter remained respectful of one another. However, the moment one of these two "kissed and told" .. it then becomes slutty because care wasn't given to respect the other, and it would be one telling that is the slut.
Another thing that I feel is that, though people may attempt to fool themselves that it's ok to fuck without feelings .. this is a lie they tell themselves. We see it everyday in here, don't we? Mainly women, they will be involved in FWB relationship and in here desperately trying to figure out a way to get the man to fall in love with her, as she did him.
