**NOTE: I wrote this on the Education Board but no one ever goes there so I was afraid it may not be seen.**

So the moment of truth is almost here guys! I'm turning 18 in 20 days and I'm getting sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo freakking PUMPED ABOUT COLLEGE! Yessssss! ......sorry I had to let that out.

Anyway, I am a Jersey girl, as you can probably see, but I have always longed to venture out to California. I don't know why, but even when I was a wee elementary school girl I would blab on and on about Cali. But, as I got older reality set in and I began to look at my situation in a more practical light. I have almost NO family on the west coast AT ALL! All of my family is scattered out on the East Coast. (I do however know a few close people who live somewhere in the California state.) Over all realizing this was very daunting and in recent years I gave up the California dream. Then, while on College Board the other day I happened to come across some California Universities and fell in love all over again. Strangely enough, the deadline for all California Universities was November 30th. It was November 30th the day I stumbled across the universities on Collegeboard.com! I took that as a sign and dedicated the rest of my day applying to four Cali Universities. I even wrote two essays. It took me forever but I got them in before 12 am🙂

Basically, I would like some opinions and insight from people who are familiar with, or from California. I have been getting advice from my family members but because they live on the east coast i feel that their knowledge is sort of limited. I did hear that California is extremely expensive to live in and I am by no means a wealthy girl! I will mostly be paying for college through financial aid and scholarships. As mentioned before I applied to four California Universities ( Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and San Diego. I will be majoring in either premed or biology depending on what each school has available. I am by no means done with my college apps. I also applied to Rutgers and I have about 5 more schools that i am looking into. I just want to make sure I do allll of my research before I just jump the gun and move to a state i have never even been to.

Hey, doll!

Is there any way you could visit the schools you've applied to? Have you visited any already?

I'm sure you've heard, selecting a college is like purchasing a house. Most people don't move in until they've seen it! I would suggest that any of the schools you're seriously considering attending- visit first!!! Talk to the students, ask questions, and make sure it's a good fit for you. After all, you'll be spending the next four years of your life there.

Yes thats the worst part of living so far away! It is very hard to just hop on a plane and go across the country. That is why I have been doing most of my research via the internet and talking to people who go to these different schools. I have a distant cousin who moved from my area all the way to Cali just last year and she was in the same financial state as me so her take on things helped a lot. I know it is not the BEST method... But for now its all I gots😢

It depends. What are you attending college for?(major?)

I will be majoring in either premed or Biology depending on the courses they offer. A lot of colleges don't have a medical program so students have to just take the necessary individual classes instead.

Actually, as long as you have that scholarship, your good to go.🙂 I'd do Biology. I mean, who isn't practicing medicine? Nonetheless, you need to research how the job markets will be in the next few years or however long those particular majors take to graduate.

Yes a few people told me to practice biology. Others say that is would be more beneficial to try to get directly into a medical program. I want to ultimately become a physician but hey, things change!🙂 I hear stem cell research is the next big upcoming, but that you have to go overseas to really practice that stuff. Who knows, we shall see🙂

just curious, have you ever done the astroclick travel on astro.com? i thought it was cool, it tells you how you'd fare on different locations on the map, based on your DOB.

Nope never done that lol. It does sound cool though

here you go: AstroClick Travel

btw, Ive been on the east coast, then the west coast, and now im midwest lol. I think you should visit your friend/school in CA first before moving, or if you don't first then move and stick it out no matter what, don't let the bad times/culture shock get you down. Im doing a lot better in the midwest, been here a few years. interestingly enough I did the astroclick travel a few days ago and it confirmed that being here was great for me.

I hightailed it to Cali when I was around your

age to study fashion design. Roots are in NY, same

as you. As far as the cost of living between the two.

They're pretty much the same. Being that you're limited

in visiting the schools on the westcoast physically. I'd

take full advantage of talking to the students and staff

of the colleges you're looking to attend like was mentioned

here already. Utilize any virtual tours of the schools to

get a feel if it'll be a good fit for you. If you're dead

set on a Cali school. Definitely hustle to get some moola

together and hook up with your cousin to check things out.

You're B-day is around the corner you know what to ask for.

Funding for a Cali trip lol. Wish you the best of luck wherever

you end up. I went to Cali and it was the best decision ever 🙂

Awww thank you so much lovey. Awesome advice. Yes, fashion is actually what my cousin went for! She loves it now. Reality is starting to set in... and fast. It is so scary. I will be out there on my own soon. I had a trip coming up that my parents were going to split for me. It would have been 12 days in Europe (Greece and some other places). It is something that we have been planning on forever...but now I am wondering if I should just use that money to buy a little car and pay for books. Ughhhhhhhh. So many things to do, so little money to do it!

What school did your cousin go to?

It'll be scary as all get out at first. But you'll

be fine. And fam is just a phone call away. You'll

go from calling every day to them asking when the hell

you're gonna pick up and call them lol. You're a Sag

you'll adapt just fine. Weather is nice and the people

a bit more laid back than here.

Are you working at all now?

I'm a greedy Sag. I personally would still do the

Europe trip and find other means of the Cali trip lol.

I am honestly not 100% sure of the name of her school. I just know that when I talked to her she said she was in North Hollywood. Yes i work waayy too much lol. But I recently had a terrible accident (got hit by a car) so I have been out of work for over a month. I am set to go back to work and school this Thursday though.. yaaaay. Yes I can be kinda greedy too but I am working on that! My family is just not very wealthy. Especially my mom. They make ends meet for me because I am a good student and they feel that I deserve the trip. But as mentioned before I am not having second thoughts. Oh well, I believe everything will play out the way it should eventually.

I can tell you all about the schools here. I just graduated from the Cal State system and know the entire college system pretty well.

There are two systems here. The UC system and the Cal State system. The UC is more private sector and will cost you more money. The CSU is more affordable compared to the UC. However, the CSU has been prone to all the budget issues with tuition due to all the state funding.

I went to CSUSB, am familiar with Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State since they were prospects for me at some time. I also know people who are at USC, CSULA, CSULB, etc.

Right now, the CSU has been pretty crazy with enrollment issues and has been freezing enrollment due to budget cuts and "limited" space. All the schools here are pretty impacted for locals, so I'm not entirely sure how they handle out of state students.

But just to give you an example, tuition on the quarter system at my school was about 1800 per quarter plus 110 for parking and then misc. fees which all totaled to be like 2300. Fullerton's parking permit is like 200, I believe. This is all in state though. Tuition for out of state is a bit higher, though I'm not entirely too sure what it would be for out of state. Every school is different.

Check out each school's site. They all should have this info on their "prospective student" pages. Some even offer virtual tours.

Fullerton is a very nice campus and I loooved San Diego State. Very nice mission style campus and they have a really good public transportation system that goes right to campus. The only thing that held me back was leaving home to go to school. I settled with mine (CSUSB) and ended up really liking it there. It's not a shabby campus.

Cost of living- rent is high. If you were to go in on an apartment nearby, you're looking at anywhere from 1500-2500 a month. On campus housing could be viable, but I know of a lot of people who choose to live off of campus. They get their own space and divvy up rent with roommates. Depending on the area, it tends to be more cost effective.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many campuses require a meal plan when you live on campus, so that's extra as well.

Gas- Currently like 4 something, depending on the area. However, most commuting is done by freeways so gas mileage isn't too bad.

California also doesn't really have seasons. You have hot, warm, and cool. I used to live in the southeast and do not miss the cold winters.

There are many premed options with the biology degree. Many schools offer them now and target the concentration more toward medicine and it preps you for the MCATs and the like.

i've been to those four areas, and just based upon my impression of the atmosphere and what's going on there i would rank them tied for first san diego and santa barbara, 2nd LA, and 3rd Santa Cruz. that's just based upon where i'd live if i had to pick not any other considerations that you might have such as majors, cost, or city size etc. all good picks though, you'll get to escape those east coast winters (though nj isn't that bad)

Hmmm very interesting. Thank you for your input. What made you rank these schools the way you did if you dont mind me asking? Another hing that I think will be important for me is public transportation. I heard the PT in LA is TERRIBLE.

Actually, the PT in LA isn't too bad. There's more metro train and bus stuff going on as opposed to the surrounding areas. I live 40 mins from LA and public transport out here is god awful. Takes you 2 hours to get anywhere via bus. The metrolink (train) seems pretty cool and efficient, moreso in the downtown region.

However, it's not a primary mode of transport for a majority of those that live in Socal. I think it's actually gained popularity since the gas prices started to get insane.
