After a very busy day when everything that could possibly go wrong had gone wrong, I was generally pissed and in a hurry. Suddenly someone put his arm around my throat and squeezed and I could feel cold metal on my neck. I didn't hear what he said exactly, but it was very likely that he was after money. I weezed that(translated into English):
"You really don't wanna do that."
I felt hesitation and then the guy let go of his grip, the presumed knife dissappeared and he ran. I went on with my own business, catching the sub...and didn't even realise what had just happened until about 30minutes later.
It wasn't in an elevator, but...
My point is that, imo, you never know how you are going to handle a certain situation until you're there. So, who knows, maybe you would have kicked his ass.

personally when I'm with anyone in confined space I always assess all the ways I could take them down like a ninja, and check out their hands/attitude to see if they might be carrying weapons, and I try to guge their intentions. Chances are He wouldn't even have a chance to take out the knife.
That said I'm not infaillible and there are many case where I would get mugged. I'd say don't play a hero and give the money, don't fight unless you're really sure of yourself.
Learn self defense if you want, not martial arts which is mostly bollocks but actual defense/kill moves.
