Well if you think about it from a timeline perspective, you’d be surprised that physicians/doctors have not actually been professionalized that long.
Professionalism of physicians has had to surpass many hurdles. 18th century was not long ago and during this timeframe physicians believed in the practice of humorism (the body is made up of a careful balance of 4 fluids ‘humors’ and an imbalance was usually something they thought they could physically see in someone...aka: someone physically unattractive) and eventually medicine adopted the germ theory of medicine which is what we currently believe in today.
