What does this mean to you? I just feel the sentence has started to mean the exact opposite of the word-by-word meaning of it. Does anyone ever, in real life, say that to someone who is truly strong and confident? Isn't it something you say to someone you wish would have been be strong and confident...and therefore isn't?
You are a strong, confident woman!
You are on page out of 2 | Reverse Order

I'm just going to be real. Nothing ruins anything more for women then the strong confidence feminist type. I'll just sum it up. You have strong confident women who act like they believe in women's rights, then end up supporting actual men pretending to be women in their sports. Nothing is worse for the majority of women then a strong confident women imo. They will make sure to ruin and steal everything you personally want in life.
Put me on a pike and tell me I'm wrong. I honestly feel like I'm right on this topic.

You have to realize I'm in the USA, so my opinions are based off an actual circus. I personally love the idea of a strong confident woman. I don't want to give the impression I'm calling women in general weak or a lesser in any way. I just come from a place completely fueled off lies and misinformation. So to me in my personal culture feminism is actually an evil aspect in my personal opinion that only hurts women. Meanwhile we have an entire far left political party that pretended to support women and their rights, while also supporting terrorists that would kill/ rape a woman if she even spoke up once. So my personal opinion is deeply biased, and based off living in an actual circus.

Okay, seems we're talking about different things, but let's do your subject:
Where I live, feminism isn't even something you talk about, becaust everyone is a feminist. Feminism here just means equal rights and equal pay for equal work, not 'Let's have revenge on all men. Men are shit.'

Well to me it's innocent. Something you would say to support, encourage and appreciate a woman on a mission of her choice whatever it may be.
I would like someone to say this to me whenever I'm having a hard time 🙂 To remind myself yes I'm not a crybaby loser, I'm a bad bitch ! Lol

See over here feminism is letting men who are pretending to be women dominant women's sports. While also letting biological minor boys change in the same room as biological minor girls, and the adults force those girls to be subjugated to that. Imo you can likely see the clear issue with it. I also apologize for ruining your thread. This was clearly about strong women, and I ruined it with my personal bias.
I actually love strong powerful women, especially when that energy is used in the right way.

Sounds like you'd want to hear it when broken down...so in a moment when you're not strong, so when they tell you this, they inform you that you're not strong, right now, but they wish you were. But, what I think is important here is that you feel empowered by it, which is I think is great!

No, it was actually about telling women who are (perhaps temporarily) weak that they are strong. But never mind. Yours is an interesting subject. Think you're talking, for instance, about people born male, and therefore with the muscle memory of a male, take over sports assigned to women. Due to this muscle memory, I strongly agree with you that this is not fair at all. What I fail to understand is what it has to do with feminism.

It can be seen as a compliment or encouragement.
Everyone has to fight and struggle. It doesn't mean that they are weak.
Athletes and soldiers are motivated by encouragement and compliments. It doesn't mean that they are weak.

That(!) is what I would have wanted to hear, rather than what I feel would have been a lie (in the moment), so, I guess it depends on who says it and to whom. I just hear it said by strangers (to the receiver), so very often, that it has lost all meaning in my ears, but if your friends say it to you, you know what they mean and feel empowered by it. My friends would never, ever say it to me unless in a moment I had actually shown courage and strength.

What does this mean to you? I just feel the sentence has started to mean the exact opposite of the word-by-word meaning of it. Does anyone ever, in real life, say that to someone who is truly strong and confident? Isn't it something you say to someone you wish would have been be strong and confident...and therefore isn't?
I would like someone to say this to me whenever I'm having a hard time To remind myself yes I'm not a crybaby loser, I'm a bad bitch ! Lol

Sounds like you'd want to hear it when broken down...so in a moment when you're not strong, so when they tell you this, they inform you that you're not strong, right now, but they wish you were. But, what I think is important here is that you feel empowered by it, which is I think is great!

But to me it's like saying I know you have the strength and courage inside you to get through every obstacle and every fight. Like I have seen it before or I can see it in your eyes. Which is cool.

Sometimes when we’re feeling sick and vulnerable it’s good to hear those words. Virgo said to me recently “you’re very strong” so it’s comforting to hear that when you
doubt it ❤️

Yeah lol. It would be better to show some compassion and empathy first before encouragement in that case 🙂 Did something happen to you at work or in a formal social setting ? People are not very considerate of feelings in those settings 😢

Exactly! Agreed! That's why I feel it can sound a little off when I hear it said, sometimes. My friends know that I wouldn't want things like that said to me unless in a moment when I have actually accomplished something, so I haven't been the 'victim' of it myself. Something like what you said before:
"I know you have the strength and courage inside you to get through every obstacle and every fight. Like I have seen it before or I can see it in your eyes."
...would have been a much better way to comfort me. It's (hopefully) true and encouraging. Again, well said!

Yes we do 😀💪

Lol when people say "strong" I pretend they're talking about physical strength, I've been called emotionally both strong and weak, simply based on "surviving suicidal ideation" when low-key waking up the next day is easier than going through with it, unless you're gonna OD like a bitch
Emotional strength is hard to define. I had an old boss who was an excellent servant leader with endless energy to do his teams jobs & empathy for them, but he was a math and mechanical genius who was financially driven because he does car shows. Exceptional physical feats aren't always so exceptional for the anorexic who's secretly anticipating burning calories. Doctors in ICU, or people helping grieving families may secretly get a sick thrill out of delivering bad news & witnessing devastation. Lots of volunteers are emotionally strong (unless they're doing it to beef up their resume). People are smart enough to understand delayed gratification, so they suffer for personal gain.
Confident, it's the only way to be. If you call yourself beautiful even if you objectively aren't, you attract support and validation en masse. If you call yourself mid at best, people echo that sentiment. So if you're remarkably self-deprecating somethings probably mentally wrong with you. I think emotionally healthy people probably are neutral and just enjoy communication with others without worrying about validation of any sort.

Its kinda funny that with men its assumed that they're strong and confident but with women its considered an outlier

I've been told I'm (mentally) strong as a compliment but also as an encouragement. By people who knew me...how would a stranger come to say something like that? I preferred it when it was said as an encouragement, because I needed to hear it. In contrast, I doubted the reason for being said as a compliment, last time I heard it.
Don't remember being told I'm a confident woman, though. I do believe I'm strong, but not overly confident, so it matches my self-image.

It’s funny until you realize neither has permission to perform outside of their assigned gender script. It’s not just assumed men are strong, it’s demanded. You don’t have a choice not to be. A woman can be strong, but not at the expense of making other people uncomfortable. Show me a strong woman and I’ll show you 20 men in the shadows that want to challenge her, humble her or remind her of her place.

This is rarely said to someone unless they have some kind of obstacle in their way.
It's like when you tell kids - "You are so brave! You can do it!"
Have you ever heard anyone say - "You are a strong, confident man!"
No, because it's assumed they are and it would be demeaning if you did.
I find it condescending.
A strong confident person does not need or expect to hear this. *shrugs*
If you want to give a genuine compliment you say - "I admire your strength and confidemce."
That's my opinion.
You worded it so much better than I did. Thank you! I do get that there are people who would find it encouraging in a time of need, and if they do, then great, but to me...nah.

First of all, I'm so, so sorry you had to go through that! I hope you feel a lot better now.
Say what you will about Margaret Thatcher, but she said a couple of good things, like:
"Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't."
Yes, defining emotional strength is definitely hard. Agreed.
"I think emotionally healthy people probably are neutral and just enjoy communication with others without worrying about validation of any sort."
I must say that I think that emotionally healthy people would probably need sooome kind of validation some time. Not needing any validation at all seems to me...not normal. But, what do I know?🙂

And the people who know you know that this is how you prefer it, so great! I've heard it too many times from strangers (not to me, but to others) when the recipient has been down and it has felt so off to me.

It's words of encouragement, nothing else. It's not said to those who sre exactly that way because they're not feeling powerless and it's said to those who are self-doubting as a reminder that they're not as weak as they think in the particular moment. It's like this imo: you don't say to a CEO - you're successful in your career, cause - Sky is blue, duh. You say it to those achieved a lot but are now struggling with some part of their career that made them self doubt and forget all the achievements they already accomplished.
Yes, I do agree it's probably well intended and it's also most often said by people who you know, which means that they know it's okay with you, so great!

I agree...unfortunately.

At one point in the film [documentary “One to One: John & Yoko”], Lennon and Ono are seen attending the first International Feminist Conference at Cambridge University, where Ono made a speech about her experience going from an artist who had “relative freedom as a woman” to how things changed after being attached to Lennon.
When she met Lennon, she said, “society suddenly treated me as a woman who belonged to a man who was one of the most powerful people in our generation. Because the whole society started to attack me and the whole society wished me dead, I started to stutter,” she said. “And suddenly, because I was associated to John, I was considered an ugly woman… That’s when I realized how hard it is for women. If I can start a stutter being a strong woman, it is a very hard road.”

Yes, it is hard.

I would think, “You are a strong, independent woman!” is more common for being controversial. I’d like to think many people (both men and women) don’t really know what the heck they’re doing in life. Most people are faking it until they make it when it comes to confidence in general.

Oh yes, that too!
The fake it til you make it thing I guess could be useful for some (if you're extreemely shy, for instance), but I must admit that, for some people, their insecurities are probably more visible with that approach since it screams mask. To me, anyway.

i dont hear anyone say that irl ever, but in shows/movies its more used as encouragement for the other person when they are not being strong or confident. its creating this harmful mentality of strong independent woman trope thats overplayed- thats affecting the viewpoints of society. kind of like propaganda and not all media is safe- and consider what is the intention behind it (i hope not overthinking this)

You're not overthinking, there are definite tropes in media that are developed in attempts to rewire people's perception of specific social groups, but I've never seen this done subtly-- it looks tryhard, like the Barbie movie lmao. I had so many people call me stupid because I didn't like it, and say the movie went over my head. That movie beat you over the head with its claim that we should respect the suffering of women due to our periods, natural vacillation of hormones, and cellulite. Misogyny is undoubtedly relevant, but those are the dumbest points to make. Men go years without receiving a compliment, I've read that women who transition to male find their reality shockingly lonely. Just like being a boss, being a man involves invisible suffering
Another propaganda movie trope I've read about is the fat dumb patriarch like peter griffin & bart simpson

I believe everyone has some form of insecurities they’re facing in life. It only makes us human. I think it’s human nature to want to “mask” our vulnerabilities the best that we can.

oo barbie movie, it was surprising ppl ACTUALLY liked it- when i saw barbie say " let me talk to those construction woman workers to get some feminine energy support" or smthing like that-im like bish where do u see these women in construction. what kind of woman actually choose to go into those types of jobs. or when she walks down the street and instantly get whistled at.
i find your point about transitioning interesting bc someone i talked bout this with recently some this media propaganda is backed by pharmaceutical companies that sell hormones/drugs to transition. men transitioning to woman is appearing to become more common- making men weak and in the mindset that they should transition to feel empowered. actually men have it pretty hard bc there is not much need for them to become a strong man also, we are in a pretty safe time period of our livesclick to expand
Lol I always use plumbing and extermination as proof that women definitely aren't going for certain male jobs like that. I wonder how common female snake wranglers are, like the ones who go to people's homes to remove a snake. That would be a badass bitch.

Absolutely! It's just a question of if you're trying to cage your whole personality into some role you have to play for the rest of your life, or if you're doing it as a way of trying to find your own natural way--trying to merge it into your own personality. Of course, it's not always that black and white--just trying to make a point.🙂

Strength and confidence comes from a deep understanding of yourself. You have to spend a lot of time in solitude to accomplish it. Not seeking attention from others. Learning how to be happy on your own. Finding your own path without the influence of others. True strength and confidence is modest, it is humble. You isolate, you look inward, you focus on healing yourself to work toward your highest potential.
Feminisim is not strength and confidence. Don't get that confused.
Solitude is necessary, agreed. Isolation? Maybe. Depends on who you are, imo. For me, isolation is needed, but that may not be the case for others. The rest I agree with 100% .
