Should I apply for FMLA/ STD after a heart attack?

Not sure if this is the right platform but I’ll try to keep this short as possible. I recently had a heart attack at the age of 31 in July. I spent 3 nights in the hospital and went through a small procedure to get a stent in one of my smaller arteries. Since then I rushed back to work and tried to live life as if it never happened. Unfortunately, 2-3 months later I started to have these anxiety attacks which I believe is stress from work & now my parents are pressuring me into taking time away from work to take care of my health and wellbeing. I applied for FMLA/STD and went to see the cardiologist to have him sign off on my paperwork for my leave. However, he declined filling out the paperwork & told me that if I am able to go to the gym to workout then I can go to work. I became discouraged and didn’t have the energy to fight for myself.

My question(s) is should I go see another doctor to sign off on my papers? Will Sedgwick even approve my short term disability leave? Is this worth the hassle? I’ve been at my job for 10 years and rarely take off any time from work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Inconsequential, but did you get the vax?

Doctors are human so they have faults as well just like the rest of us no matter how they act.

I'd suggest getting a second, third or even fourth opinion. That Doc is just looking at his occupation as a job instead of it being their duty. Worth consideration especially since health is primary.

Yes I did get the vax, I got one shot instead of two (Pfizer) sometimes I wish I never taken it. Too late now.

But thanks for the response. I’ll probably try and visit my PCP.

I feel like you want to use this as a excuse to get away from work and take a vacation. Doctor is correct. You were not being honest. Why didn't you just tell the doctor about your anxiety attacks at work and request a leave through that?

Address the source of your anxiety.

Anxiety is a sign of a internal conflict.

Tell me about the anxiety. What situation triggered it and what was the conflict with yourself over it?

I actually told my cardiologist about the anxiety attacks which is why I scheduled an appointment to meet with him to make sure I was ok. He ordered me to do blood work which everything came back ok. He told me my stress was no big deal and then made the comment about the gym. Maybe he is right.

I know that I haven’t had these many anxiety attacks back to back & I only get them at work.

Your parents have your best interest in mind. The cardiologist may as well but they are also on the payroll and ultimately you are a number. If your in the US its healthcare for profit, not prevention.

"told me that if I am able to go to the gym to workout then I can go to work"

This makes me sad and doesn't really add up. Gym is a general term. For all he knows you spend the time stretching and relaxing in the sauna.

Also isn't exercise a pillar of heart attack recovery? A lot of the factors that contribute to heart issues can be improved with exercise. Cardiac rehab they literally monitor your heart rhythm while your on the treadmill or whatever version of cardio. So this cardiologist seems a bit wack.

Get a second opinion. Hell get a 3rd or 4th.

Also I'd suggest exploring other avenues of therapy outside of medical system. Quit smoking, stress management be it meditation or massage, weight loss if applicable, and even just diet eating heart healthy foods and what not. Your mental health plays a big part here so talking to someone like a therapist or life coach could also be beneficial.

Yes I couldn’t believe he said that and how he said it.

I am still in disbelief that this even happened to me. I’ve always watched what I eat, and the things I put into my body. I know this could be genetics as well which is out of my control.

I can’t seem to stop thinking about it. The doctors don’t know why this happened which is even more scary for me because I can’t connect the dots on why and what can I do from preventing another one. You are right about the therapist, that may be my next move after I visit my primary doctor.

No, going to have to stop that train of thought right there.

Your concern and feelings here are valid, just misplaced. When I say internal I mean psychologically. Anxiety and anxiety attacks are a physical manifestation of a mental and emotional issue with yourself. It's a internal conflict.

Question yourself as to why you feel that way. What is it you are suppressing. Anxiety is a kind of fear response.

You can do that by doing a mental excuses of questioning yourself on paper.

You ask a question, then answer it and, Then question the answer. You write whatever comes out without filtering and judging what you write. Basically You just write the response without thinking. And only think about the question to ask.

You keep digging and questioning yourself until something clicks with you and you feel a sense of relief.

I suppressed the entire heart attack and pretend it never happened. I’m partially embarrassed it happened it to me. I take pride in my health and for the doctors to not have any accurate reason as to why this happened is even more concerning. So instead, I jumped back into my normal life trying to forget that ever happened but then I get reminded by it. I constantly ask myself if I’m going to die soon? Is this the beginning to the end of my story?

I use work as a way to escape. I didn’t plan to take off but I begin to have anxiety attacks while I’m here. My boss doesn’t make things better. That’s another story. I can’t count the number of time I have to go hide in my car or the restroom just to cry to get it all out then return back to the office like nothing is wrong.

I just need a break. I’m not sure how long for but Im mentally exhausted.

I’m not saying it’s even remotely the same situation but my brother had a similar experience with doctors opinions somewhat recently.

He was having a lot of heart palpitations and anxiety. Lightheaded, vision blurry, even passing out type symptoms. Dude is very strict with diet and exercise and in his early 30s. Doesn’t smoke or drink. No underlying health concerns.

He got multiple tests done and opinions and was told everything from ‘it’s just in your head’ to ‘it’s a side effect from the vaccine’ to ‘long covid’.

Me knowing him his whole life and also the particulars of his situation it was a no brainer to me. Your health is suffering because you dropped everything to move back home and take care of our obstinate father who refuses to be helped. The stress is literally killing you.

Thankfully he listened to me and went back home and all those symptoms disappeared. He’s back on his running 5 miles a day bs. Your environment plays a huge role in your health. If work is the biggest stressor it absolutely plays a role.

Good luck on your journey. I hope things improve for you.

Take solace in the fact had you not been healthy, could have been much worse.

The heart incident isn't your fault right?

Not everything is in your control. This isn't a reflection of you. You take good care of yourself.

So why feel embarrassed and take it personal like that?

Did you use to be very over weight or another kind of traumatic experience involving your physical body or health?

Maybe something you observed from someone else or took it to heart?

Do fmla for panic attacks

Have your normal doctor write it.

“Panic” that it haveing a heart attack. That should work. Stress doesn’t count on a serious Illness n panic attacks count. Take a month or more off

One thing I regret after having. Cancer is after my radiation 2 weeks I return immediately

I was so fatigued I cried to my ex husband that I couldn’t go to work. But we had bills to

Pay. Did he say don’t worry we figure it out . Nope.

My coworkers help out with my work because I felt so week. So take care pf yourself first.

No see primary doctor to write u off soon don’t wait. U are having panic attacks. Don’t wait longer. It reasonable to have that due to stress and fear its a heart attack. This is FMLa

I’ll message u.

“You doctor must write u have a serious medical condition that requires you to be off until……. For reevaluation.”

I recall being a technicality to make sure it’s less that a month at a time. Like every three weeks get the medical note as above

A cardiologist isn't going to give you fmla for a heart attack unless you have a job that is physically demanding. If you have a desk job...then you don't need fmla for a heart attack.

Now, if you're having documented mental issues like your anxiety then another doctor may sign off on you getting fmla for that. I'd go to your PCP

Cardiologist(and a lot of other specialist) are particularly dicks. It's going to be hard to find one that's going to sign off on that for you.

Sorrry but employer doesn’t need to know shit! Only if serious condition listed under fmla

First off talking about the doctor.

As for the employer, immediate supervisor may just be another human.... and understand. Likely to approve leave or get it approved. Extra days off or days off in a row. Pretty sure mental health is covered now.

I personally am a pretty chill boss. If I believe your gaming the system or lying to me, even I will not be forgiving.

Finally I told her what to do to handle it herself. If that doesn't work out she can speak to her employer. If she isn't a trash employee they will low key do what they can for her.
