Disability like not working again? Or just for a small amount of time or what? If you're going for full disability know that you're likely to get denied at LEAST once and you're gonna have to go for many medical exams and all that. If you're gonna do it, don't do it and then give up on it tho.
Short term. I'll definitely be able to work again but just not right now while I'm healing. Ideally I'd want long-term though... but I doubt I'd be able to get it because I've been able to work. I'm just not able to when I've suffered a seizure from my brain device getting blocked which threatens my life.

I would look into your state laws concerning that. But at the same time, get a disability lawyer. But that's mostly how I hear people go about it.

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this. A few years back I had to use my short term disability through my job when I got severely sick and couldn’t work for several months. However, I don’t have much experience with it and don’t know much about it. And I know your situation is different. I hope you’re able to get things sorted out and get the help you need.

Ohh yeah. So here it's called UI (unemployment insurance) and I did qualify for it but I can't get paid out for that if I'm not ready to go back to work. I have to be able to return to work in order to get paid... which IMO is crazy.

So my symptoms didn't actually start showing up severely enough for me to notice until after I got fired. But with that being said, I'm technically disabled since I have a VP shunt that was surgically inserted into my head to stop me from risking having seizures. I depend on it to be able to function normally. Having had brain cancer, the tumor put pressure on my skull and my CSF wouldn't drain properly which added to the pressure and caused me to have seizures as a baby. I was put on an IEP and the special ed program throughout elementary and middle school. I got off of that program in high school only because my IQ had improved up to the standard for kids my age at the time.
The last employer I had prior to this most recent one did know I was sick when they let me go. I didn't have the money to see a doctor at the time so they fired me for attendance issues.

Yes. Because what the fuck am I supposed to do for income now? I qualified for these benefits but now that I literally just had emergency neurosurgery, I can't go back to work so oh, now I'm not eligible to get paid my unemployment benefits. FOH

Honestly I don't even know if it's worth the effort. I probably wouldn't come out with a lot of money doing that so I'm letting it go. Plus my company sent me instructions on how to file to unemployment when they dismissed me, so I'm overall okay with the result.

They do hahaha trust me, but I'm glad I'm out of there. I wanted to quit so many times because of how stressful and toxic the environment was but I was afraid if I voluntarily quit then I wouldn't qualify for unemployment payments.

click to expandAs someone on them.. it's not. It took me like 6+ years. They're going to make you jump through every hoop. Make sure your doctors are taking notes accurately. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself, don't worry about coming off as mean or pushy. It's YOUR health. YOU are the one that has to deal with this for however long and YOU are the one that has bills to pay etc. None of these people engaging with you in the medical or legal arenas will entirely care about that. YOU advocate for YOU. I know people on them with way more definitive problems, massive problems and they still got denied and had to appeal. Do not ever let your application or appeal die or you will have to start over IIRC.

Trust me, if I could've made it through conservatory, I would've. But I got burnt out from all the pressure of making it in the music world and my mom died when I was in conservatory. A lot of musicians, even if they're really talented, don't make it.

You should maybe talk to someone at your state office of welfare and unemployment. Explain your medical situation and current circumstances. Maybe even look into some loans if you can. Family and friends, but that’s also neither here nor there. At the end, we best help ourselves. But I know your situation is difficult right now. Hopefully it won’t be forever 🙏
Like stars said, consider asking crowdfunding for help. It’s nothing to be ashamed of! Although I have Leo moon and it’s cringe for me too.
Can you do some work from home? Maybe part time? Maybe sell something you don’t need right now?
Disability takes a long time. I had clients who waited years.

You also may have to talk to a judge at some point nearer to where a decision is made. I had to do it twice. Luckily, I was able to do my second one over the phone. First one I had to go sit in a small court in a building lol. I don't think it happens in all cases, I could be wrong, but I thiiiiiink mine was only because they felt like they couldn't make a judgement? They go through the kinds of jobs a person with xyz disability would do. They ask (their expert) about how many openings are there for jobs that xyz are capable of doing etc.

*sigh* Jesus Christ... just because someone is able to take on a wide variety of work doesn't mean they're not disabled and shouldn't qualify for disability benefits. This is what I'm afraid of because my disability isn't visibly obvious unless I have a flare-up which only happens once every few years (typically). I mean, you could see my head and neck scars which would tell you that I have a disability but yeah.

I recently got fired from my last job and filed for unemployment, and I got a few payments of it after submitting a questionnaire and proof of my hospitalization for my VP shunt blockage. Because my doctor hasn't cleared me to go back to work, I'm unable to get paid out my unemployment benefits. I'm looking into applying for disability next. Is there anything else that I should look into for financial help? What if I don't get approved for disability?
