This is funny talking about southern roots. My grandmother used to have a vegetable garden and I just told my son the other day to get ready, because I want one in the back yard. Sadly, some trees will have to come down, not enough full sun back there. We are surrounded by trees. So I guess, we'll be playing lumber jack first and then I can start my oasis of a garden. πŸ™‚ I can't wait, I don't have the greenest of thumbs but, I think I can remember some of what she did to keep it going. I just have to watch out for the snakes... :/ I know, lime and sulfur keeps them away. However, what to do with the crows and deers and all the other nice animals that we haven't named yet, who knows... I'll get creative.

go for tomatoes and peppers - easy peasy... forget the leafy stuff for now, leaks are forgiving too, and raspberries.

RoamingFree, you just need a man that had a matriarchal upbringing with strong men that protected the matriarch and taught the do's and the dont's of manhood is all. My father always said to never be with a woman that put herself in a man's position. Wise words from that Bull.

true.
I have no issues being at home - I kicked the corporate job in favor of raising my kids and haven't looked back and refuse to even get entwined with a man who doesn't get that. Each has their role to play in the family circle and a woman cannot be a woman if she is not given the honorable place that she deserves, which in turn puts a man on his place he earned rightfully. I think people forget that this is not a competition. I think they forget that family is about all having distinct parts to play and all roles need to be fulfilled. It's not a push and pull. It's a give and give. The taking comes after all has been said and done and than can be and should be taken with a free hand well deserved and given with gratitude. People forget about the importance of each role and diminish it quite easily because the pure fiber of familial education has been broken and disregarded. I think a lot has to do with people moving away from their roots and leading lives separate over distances where the appreciation for all becomes non-existent just because the communication is diminishing, even if we live in an age where we have the means for it. People forgot to look in each others eyes and bare their souls. I wonder if it's because life seems so distracted right now. We chase all that is just an illusion to prove our self worth through visual tricks...but we rot inside from emotional and humane starvation we impose on ourselves.

Me included - I chase that Coach bag just the same as my neighbor...

So true and a good start. One of my older neighbors has a tract of land and he has a nice size garden, with the greens and all that, so I guess I'll be trading my peppers for his greens until mine is fully up and running. πŸ˜„

beefsteak for sandwiches and salads and roma for sauces - just omit the seads in the sauce - it's what makes some peoples sauces acidic - it's the seeds.

πŸ˜„ Me too. It's a learning process, isn't it. It was one thing to go and pick tomato worm and gather in mothers garden..quite another to plot and plan my own and put it into motion. And those evil companies are at it again I see *haughty sniff*. Teasing with their catalogs. LOL Classic. I had cucumbers for days and days. One day you have these polite green vegetables, couple days later you've golden U-boats. I thought I'd be clever and out came the WWII era cookbooks ( which really are the best for canning I've found ) and I found "Golden Cucumber Relish". It smelled great putting it up, but not one of the children liked it. They don't like it when I put up pickles in general. Dills or bread and butters, the house smells like a vinegar sneeze. I like it though, smells nice to me when I'm canning that or my green/hot pepper jelly.

That's part of it, passing that love down so it is never forgotten. One of my very first memories was crouched down low around my Grans clothesline scalping her wee strawberries. Best berries in the world. I go in with my mouth smeared red and she said A--- D----! Have you been out near my clothesline? with the biggest twinkle in her deep brown eyes. I down low all eyes expecting the scolding ( hadn't she told us not time and time again? ) until I looked up and saw all that warmth shining out of her. Lord I miss that woman. Her pies were sin, the kitchen her domain and all within.

also pickled pears with cloves are fantastic with pork roasts

That sounds fabulous. I've never made pickled pear. Usually reduce it down to spiced pear sauce, or pear butter for pancakes. Ever swirl apple butter into cottage cheese? Terrific. I make mine in the slow cooker after I've sauced and drained the apples. Ahhhh this is so homely in the classic definition and wonderful. Does my ticker good.

Seed--- yea takes a lot of patience. It's nothing wrong with a mixture of both though. Depends on what you are trying to plant and how fast you want those suckers to grow. I want to take my time with mine this time though, so I'll be a seed girl this time around. I just want to see the fruits of my labor from the very beginning and I want my children and grands involved in the entire process because they need to know.

Cola ham.. is that when you pour coke on ham and worms come out?

NO! LOL You slowly simmer a ham in Coca-Cola ( bone in, a proper ham mind! ) then you lovingly lift that bad boy out, place it in a sturdy baking pan and score it. Stud it with clove. Make a mixture of brown sugar, dried mustard and pack that on. Drizzle it with the darkest molasses you can find. Bake it low and slow till that love just glazes up. I think I just drooled on the keyboard.

Yes he did. My brothers and if I can remember about two other men helped him. I still have all the pictures of the him building during the process. It took him five years to complete it. However, can we say rennovations are no joke. I learned some things from him though which helps and Home Depot... I should've had stock in them. A lot of the stuff, I'm doing myself, the rest well, I'll have to call in the professionals. But it's worth it.

Oh I can just imagine LibraLuv, I like her personality, her show and have some of her cookbooks as well. Any woman with a love that deep for real butter, ooey gooey cake, real sugar cream pie and bacon most definitely has my vote. And who doesn't want to taste something and cross their eyes in that 'unnnngh ungh' response? We all do it, and I laughed so hard the first time I saw that. I bet it's a good eating experience there, her man reminds me of a huge teddy bear.
