i had a shiba inu once. she was SO sweet. she didn't have any aggression at all, but then again i think there was a good possibility that she had been abused by a previous owner.

i'd be walking her down the street, and she would literally flop down on her back right in front of strangers to get her belly rubbed. people either thought it was adorable or were totally confused.

the only thing is she chewed A LOTTTTTTTTT...and that's an understatement. i think she would have literally chewed up the hardwood if she had a chance.

definite soft spot for them.

now the wolf hybrids, i've seen some that are absolutely beautiful. i'm fascinated by their temperament. but i know that i couldn't own one. for starters, i don't have enough land for one to be happy. and second, i'm not experienced enough as a dog owner to know how the fuck to raise one.

but i think they're great pets for someone who knows what they're doing.

If you want a really good, affectionate family dog, that also has good instincts and capabilities for home/family defense, don't overlook the American Bulldog!

I wanted a dog that would be friendly, affectionate, intelligent, have a long life (15 years or so), not really aggressive but capable of knowing when it's the proper time to be aggressive. That's the American Bulldog. I had thought about a Great Dane or a Mastiff, but they don't live long enough imho, 7 or 8 years. I get too attached to my dogs to be replacing them every 7 years.

What I've noticed about my American Bulldog and those that others I know own, they aren't a dog that barks too much. If they bark, there's a reason. Mine loves just about every child, adult, and animal she's ever met... but is smart enough to know when someone shows up who is a bit "off." When someone comes here or to my parents' business that makes us feel uncomfortable, she will watch them, walk up and sniff them, allow them to pet her... and then she will get between us and that person, lay down, and watch them intently. I'm certain that if one of us were ever threatened she would lose it and give somebody a very BAD day. Where I live we have more white tail deer per square mile than anywhere else in the world probably, and she takes special delight in keeping the damned deer away from the garden... which is awful helpful. She doesn't bother chasing rabbits and small animals so much, but she loves chasing the big stuff like deer. Maybe that's why these dogs are used for hunting deer and wild boar, where laws allow it. She and I may go hunting wild boar together at some point, but she'd only be around to stay close to me in case I got charged. Wild boar will happily charge and eat you while you scream.

Meanwhile, with us, she's a lovable big baby. 80+ lbs now, 18 months old, and she's still growing, and still thinks she's a lap dog. They are stubborn, but very intelligent, and she responds best to training if I wait for her to come up to me and show interest in doing something together. That will happen several times a day... she will trot up to me, look at me and want to "play"... so we grab the treats and work on obedience training and tricks. That's the key to training such a stubborn dog... hehe... do the training when they come up to you wanting to do it, rather than just grabbing them when you ar

I really want this baby here:

It's the Samoyed, also known as the Alaskan Eskimo, I believe. I just love the white fur. And I mean, if it wasn't this, I'd probably want a lab or a huskie... or a Pomeranian.

Pretty dog, but a nightmare to comb and bathe I bet.

True, but that's probably only an issue in the winter. In the summer, I'm sure I'd shave it so it wouldn't die of heat stroke lol.

What is your favorite dog breed?

I've always liked German Shepherds and Rottweilers. I've been considering getting a dog here soon and I think I've settled on a German Shepherd. They are all around good dogs, really can't complain about em' except for perhaps the shedding which combing once or twice will fix. I'm also inclined towards a rottweiler but haven't made up my mind yet.

Overall,
I think A GSD will suit me for the purposes of home defense/family friendliness, protectiveness, intelligence and a buddy I can take along hunting/fishing.

Your turn!

I have an english pointer male not much for defense but beautiful and is big 28 inches tall. Now my female catahoula is more protective but that could be because she is a female. Both are not listed as prohibited breeds on all homeowner's insurance polices

Black Labrador

best dog ever.

!!! a girl from my class has one named Libby.
& she seriously looks like a little baby seal. Cutest face ever.

Me & Libby are bffls...I only go to that girl's house to see my Libberydoooo....I don't even like the girl that much.

The first time I was over there, we were sitting at the table, and I looked down to find Libbys head in my lap and every single one of her toys placed around my feet.

my heart, it melted.

Nope they are two different breeds. Different size, different purpose, different coat.

Sammys:
Males typically weigh between 23—30 kg (50—65 lbs), while females typically weigh 17—25 kg (40—55 lbs).
Height:
AKC Standard : 21—23.5 inches (53—60 cm) at the shoulder for males, 19—21 inches (48—53 cm) for females.

Samoyeds have a dense, double layer coat. The topcoat contains long, coarse, and straight guard hairs, which appear white but have a hint of silver coloring. This top layer keeps the undercoat relatively clean and free of debris. The under layer, or undercoat, consists of a dense, soft, and short fur that keeps the dog warm.

The Samoyed was used for sledding, herding, guarding and keeping their owners warm- You can also spin and knit their fur.

~~~
Eskies:
Size There are three separate size divisions of the American Eskimo Dog (all measurements are heights at withers): Toy, 9 inches to and including 12 inches; Miniature, over 12 inches to and including 15 inches; and Standard, over 15 inches to and including 19 inches
The American Eskimo Dog was originally bred to guard people and property.
Their topcoat is long and straight, and the undercoat is thick and plush. (a lot longer top coat than Sammys)
~~
I used to rescue Brittanys also. I think the most I had at one time was.. 14 or 15?
Aren't they wonderful? 🙂 My lab too was such a friendly dog, and always so excited to see all the people. She loved to swim and catch frisbees, but she would chew up and eat them if I didn't watch her. The first time I scooped up some frisbee laced dog poop was sort of disturbing 😛
