I took pictures of an unused (in spring) icerink for DXPIL yesterday.
The pictures are boring though, as unused ice rinks tend to be.
Just surprised to see one in the middle of a beach town. Literally a few steps away from the beach volleyball courts.
I couldn't figure out if they'd concreeted over the ice or just removed the ice completely.
Anyway I'll set up an ice hockey franchise full of failed beach volleyball pros here, to take on the San Jose Sharks.

^Finished watching this, really good film.
Tough to watch at first because the narrative isn't jumping out at you. They go through all these different elements that came with being an enforcer, and the bigger picture of being in a fast (and faster since 2005 rule changes) contact sport where people can hit each other not just with fists, but shoulder or body checks at 35-40mph+ speeds.
They also show two enforcers who graduated from Princeton, and another who had a bunch of alcohol and drug problems just to show you can't label an enforcer "a goon". No two guys' experience of getting paid to fight 40 times a year was the same.
They talk about how an enforcer is seen as the moral hub of the team inside of the team and, on the outside, seen as completely the opposite because he'll come to destroy you. But there's a moral code there where he's willing to sacrifice himself for any team-mate, and even a moral code between fighters where they fight along pre-agreed codes because they respect their profession.
Then it gets into the bigger picture of concussions in sports, and starts to parallel that Will Smith movie in American Football.
Reality: 5% of recorded concussions in ice hockey come from fighting. And, more surprisingly, even more concussions can't even be linked to any direct contact with the head. A lot of concussions just come from whiplash, or the body changing direction sharply on the ice. But of course no one wants to talk about something that, if it were addressed properly, would lead to money hemorrhaging from the game (like all corruption in all sports, not just ice hockey). So let's just make the enforcers the fall guys and claim the game is "safer" without fighting.
But in the end they ask if the enforcer is being phased out, and yet most of the concussions inside ice hockey are coming from players who now feel they can get away with anything because they know the other team can't just bring on a guy to whack him anymore - then who's really protecting the game from itself anymore?
